Question:
How does wls affect your shoe size?

I found a great pair of shoes that I'm considering buying and they're on clearance for a great price. But then I started thinking that I seem to remember a friend telling me after she lost some weight, and in her case probably only about 30 pounds, that her shoesize shrunk. So since my surgery is in less than one month, I'm wondering if I buy those great shoes ow if they'll still fit after I lose weight. Any post-ops have any experiences to share about this?    — cp (posted on May 22, 2002)

You are right to wonder--My shoe size went from a 9 down to a 7 or 7 1/2! I would say that if they are shoes you can wear socks with, buy them so that you can wear thin socks (like trouser socks) now. Then when you lose weight, you can buy heavier socks and little heel pad thingies to get more wear out of them. It worked for me!

I'm down 24 lbs. since surgery (plus 15 pre-op). That's 39 lbs. My shoes (loafer type) are getting way too big! I think I'm not a "wide" width anymore...some of my 10's that are medium width fit okay now. So, yes, your shoe size does change with weight loss. Hugs, Joy

I would definitely wait. I have lost 60 pounds so far (5 mo out) and had to get all new shoes (even sneakers!) I went from a 7 1/2 wide to a 6 wide or 6 1/2. Wait and by yourself some new ones in a a few months (grin)

HI, I have to agree with the other posters. Wait. I was wearing almost an 11, and now 10 months out, down 160lbs , I'm wearing a 9. Yes I'm still a bigfoot LOL. I had to donate all my shoes.

I had open RNY 2/11/02, and am down 80 pounds. Pre-op I wore an 11 wide and now I wear a regular 10. Figures it would disappear from my feet first. :) But I'm not complaining!

I've lost 62 lbs and my tennis shoes fit fine but my dress shoes feel loose. I think if I were to kick my leg my shoe would go flying off my foot!

To Daniel and others who were wondering: I have heard that our shoe sizes go down when we lose weight not because of the loss of fat, but because of the loss of pressure on our feet. The weight was spreading out the tissue and bones in our feet, making them wider. After surgery, I guess they can go back to normal. I am sure a little is due do fat loss, but I don't think it's much.

My feet have definetely went down in size since surgery. Down almost 60lbs and started out in a women's 12, now I'm in an 11 and those are getting too big!!!! My shoes are more like flip flops.LOL. I have to tie my shoe laces very tight to get my shoes to stay on.

I had to add my two cents because I went sandle shopping this past weekend. I was very suprised to see that I had lost a shoe size myself. I have lost 80 pounds total and gone from an 8 to a 7. I thought it was the funniest thing, but hey I am not complaining.

I don't have a scientific answer to this, but before I became MO and was a fairly normal size person, I wore a size 8 medium. I got pregnant and went up to a 9 medium. Continued to gain weight after pregnancy and now I wear a 10 medium! Hopefully, post-op I will get back down to an 8! Daniel, I think guys feet are different somehow. I mean you guys have full grown feet practically in middle school!!!

I lost weight once many moons ago. 80 pounds. My shoe size went down, coz I was buying longer shoes to compensate for width. So, I was getting size 9 when I really need 81/2 W etc. I know for sure our feet lose. Just be careful that when you do buy new shoes you get your length measured, coz at that time I went crazy and bought up a bunch of new shoes that were too short. LOL. Also, a lot depends on how much you have to lose. If you have 100 to lose then you will notice a shoe size loss earlier than someone who has say 200-300 to lose.

I definitely had "fat" feet! A friend (?) commented that I had Flintstone feet. While some people only gain weight on their bellies, others, like me, gain it evenly all over their bodies. I am down 140 pounds and my shoe size went from a 9EEE to 8 regular.

Jennifer L. is correct. What happens also is that as we were putting the weight on, our arches drop therefore spreading the foot out longer and wider. As we lose the weight, less pressure is on the foot. You also lose the fat padding. So with these two combined, your feet will get smaller and shorter. I have gone from a 9 to 7.5 with losing 77lbs. Even my sandles that are adjustable had to be tightened just recently. Don't buy those shoes on clearance, it will be a waste of money. Unless you think you can get your moneys worth before you lose the weight.

I'm only 6 weeks & 3 days out and by my 9-day check up, I had lost a shoe size. Weird, huh?

Many moons ago when i was within "normal" weight range I took a size 5 1/2 shoe, now being morbidly obese I take a 6 1/2 WW. My foot is damn near as wide as it is long. hoping this will cahnge w/ WLS :D
