Question:
Sombody PLEASE tell me this goes away...
I am 15 days post-op. Around day 12 post-op I started having nausea. First it was a bout just after eating and I laid down for 2 hours and then I was fine. Now I seem to be nauseous all the time. I do not wake up feeling nauseous, but begin to feel nauseous right after I injest anything. Please tell me this is common and will go away in time (soon). I also experienced pretty bad nausea in the hospital from the morphine and was treated with Reglan and Zofran, which worked pretty well. I also have an ongoing dull headache all day long...not sure if it is related to the nausea or not. I have not vomited, nor do I have "frothing", just the nausea. Please help! Hi,
I don't know if it is common or not, but you are
describing my experience to a tee. EVERYTHING made me
feel nauseated...even the thought of food. But it DOES
pass, truly it does. In the meanwhile, sucking sugarless
peppermints really helped alot. Take care, you will be okay soon...and then
you will be able to help the next person who has the same problem!!

I don't know if I was "normal" or not, but I sure had the same
experience as you are having. EVERYTHING made me totally sick for that
first 12 weeks or so post-op. Finally, around week 13, everything got SOOO
much better. I think the constant headache was simply from not eating
enough ... and the nausea is probably caused because your tummy's still
healing, and it's very sensitive to food still. Stick in there. It DOES
get better!!

I am one month post-op (bpd/ds) and I have the pattern of nausea. I coudn't
even ride in the car it got so bad. It is misery to be so nauseated that
you can't eat but you are hungry, so the nausea gets worse. My dr sent me
Fennergrin (sp) but it made me so sleepy. After a few days of it, I asked
for something else and he gave me a prescription for nausea patches. One
goes behind your ear for 3-4 days and it is timed released. You get seven
in a pack. It is working for me at least for right now.

How much water are you getting in? How does it taste? Thaty dull headache
might be slight dehydration, so even a few oz of water might help that.

Hi Joy,
I am only 8 days post op but I did notice one thing, if I have even 1
teensy bit of fat in anything I eat I get nauseated. I dont' know if this
helps you but maybe try going to clear liquids for a while just to get your
fluids in. Best of luck to you!

I am 3 1/2 months post op and for the first 8 weeks I was nauseous all the
time. Around week 9-10 it started getting better. I have noticed if I eat
something with fat in it I still get the same feeling. When this happen
now it goes away in about 15 minutes.

hang in there, I experienced the same thing. I worked closely with my
dietician to find out if it was not enough water, eating too little, too
much, too many carbs....maybe I should try a little juice...FINALLY, I was
given some medication for this, but only needed it for about a week. This
is a common thing that WILL go away. One day, (about 2 months later) I
realized that it was gone. I do have it ocassionally, after eating an egg
or a little milk, but nothing like the first 2 months. Get ahold of your
dietician A.S.A.P. and document everything, including water intake. Don't
let this go on for more than a week or so, ask and insist from your surgeon
some medication after eliminating some potential causes. Just remember,
some things that you enjoyed before (for me a cheeseburger) may make you
nauseous post surgery as your taste and tollerance does change. Good Luck!

Hi everyone...I'm the poster of the question. My nausea seems a bit better
today (day 16 post-op) and my headache is gone. Perhaps this is the end of
it. I will keep in mind the behind the ear patches and also I have gone
back to a liquid diet (maybe that's why). No chicken for me for now. Just
liquids and soft foods. I am already on Protonix (proton pump
inhibitor...reduces acids) for another few days. My doc told me to stay on
it for two weeks after leaving the hospital and then stop. If stopping the
Protonix makes the nausea worse, I will stay on it. Thanks everyone for
all your great ideas. Michelle, I really do think the headache was caused
by dehydration. It seems to have abated since I've been drinking more.
Thanks again. Love and hugs, Joy
