Question:
I did a bad thing!!
Last night I was bored and like I did before wls, I turned to food. I ate some Doritoes (Nacho cheese ones). I only took a few and then kept going back for a few more. I chewed them good and ate until I was full. So my pouch was full of doritoes. I felt a little nausea afterwards but didn't dump. I was soooo upset with myself. I'm worried about gaining weight again or not losing. I am 5 wks post-op from open rny and have lost about 35 lbs but this morning it looks like I gained a few back. Can anyone give me some snacking ideas so that I don't turn to the wrong foods again. I have them in the house because I have 2 kids ages 11 & 12 and they were buy 1 get 1 free. I still have to keep snacks in the house for the kids but usually I don't buy the ones I like too. Help! — Peggy D. (posted on May 15, 2002)

My answer WOW Doritos! YUMMY! But do try to keep it at an ounce of
chips!

I had Doritos last night also. But something I was goin to say is that I
bought a couple of bags of the porkskins, regular and the hot and spicy, to
keep at work and at home. When I get a snack craving I usually eat about 4
or 5 of them and I am satisfied. I tried the Doritos just to see if I could
eat them. I am 7 weeks out and down 45 pounds. Best of losin'..

It's okay- don't freak out. I did a similar thing but mine was with a
Klondike Bar. I was SOOOO mad at myself. Remember the feelings you are
feeling right now, recommit to eating healthy, and move on. As for snack
ideas, I like some fresh popcorn for that munchie snack. I also like
crackers with cheese when I want a few crunchie carbs, but the cheese adds
some good protein. Nuts are good- cashews are my fav. Good Luck!! :)

Well when I was about one week post op I ate one cheese twister and I
almost worried my self to death. But It was ok. Really try to stay away
from bad snacks, but when I get a craving like that I try the Wow Doritoes
they are fat free.

Please don't beat yourself up. We all have done something similar. Mine was
with a granola bar, and a chocolate chip cookie. There were better choices,
but I have to remind myself: pre-op, I would have eaten the WHOLE box of
granola bars, not just one, and the whole pack of cookies. Same with me and
doritos...the whole bag woulda been gone in 2 days. I see a lot of people
on here who deny themselves nothing, as long as it's in moderation. I have
to agree with them. This is a lifestyle change, not another one of those
blasted 'diets'. I don't know about you, but dieting never worked for me
before. I am only 3 months post-op (75 pounds down) so I have a ways to go
in the mental part of all this, but I am sure I will succeed. I also have
kids (ages 2 and 11) so I have not-so-great foods around the house too. One
thing I have started doing is buying the single size servings of snacks, or
getting them from the bulk foods department. That way, there is just enough
and none leftover for me. :) Please know that you are definitely not alone.
Take care!

I also keep Doritos in the house for the kids and have a handful every once
in a while. What I usually snack on if I have that crunchy craving is
Quakes (mini rice cakes) always in the BBQ flavor and Genisoy Soy crisps
(same as quakes but are healthier and have good protein). Its when I run
out of the Soy Crisps that I turn to the Quakes. My kids love the quakes
so I keep those in the house so they don't eat my crisps. The crisps cost
about $1 more than the quakes per bag and I have to make a special trip to
the health food store to get them. Just remember that *you are human* and
normal and its OK to have something off of your 'ok list'. Normal people
eat doritos. They don't eat them every day, and neither will you. Just
move past it. You are doing just fine!

i think you are soooo brave to ask for help!! just realizing what you did
and acknowledging the reason is a really BIG step!!! as long as you know
that we are all human and that can happen to anyone i think you'll be just
fine. don't beat yourself up about it.

I dont think that this will hurt you at all. Sometimes we have little
cravings. As long as you dont make it a habit, it shouldnt be a problem.
I eat stuff like that every once in a while. I try to eat healthy most of
the time, but I dont beat myself up when I eat something not so good for
me. Even eating like this, I have continued to lose, it is slow but still
going down. I personally have decided that this is a way of life, and Im
trying to set my habits in a good direction and not do the "diet"
thing. Best of luck to you!!

Thanks for all your words of support!!! This site is great and I love you
all!! I would get an "ear-full" and a lecture if I told anyone
in my family about the doritos but not from you guys. Thanks. I'm back on
the right track now. Had 2 orange wedges for snack on my way to work this
mornng!!

I have a child as well and even he has modified his foods since I have had
surgery....as a matter of fact everyone in my house has..and they are all
better for it. We have rid our house of the high fat, non-nutritious
snacks and now consider them "treats" when we go on a car trip or
to the park or something. We live in a world today where there is a
modification or alternative to every food imaginable. Maybe Baked Lays
instead of Doritos? Your kids are at the age where they should start
understanding what good food choices are. Most schools have vending
machines these days so maybe once a week you can give them a buck to put in
the machine for their own individual size bag of Doritos? They will get
their Doritos fix and you won't have to be tempted.....just a thought.

I keep sugar free popsicles in my freezer. Although I am only 12 days
post-op so I haven't really hit a serious munchie craving yet.

How about fruit and nuts for the kids? Maybe some carrot sticks or celery
and ranch s/f f/f dressing. sf/ff ice cream
is not too bad for them either. You really don't want to set your kids up
to be MO do you? High calorie, sugar and salt are not good for them. You
may be using your kids to keep snacks around the house for yourself. You
don't need to snack. That is called grazing and one of the surest ways to
foil WLS. Lookup grazing in the library. Good Luck

CONGRATULATIONS FOR TELLING ON YOURSELF...IT TAKES COURAGE. I KNOW IT IS
SO SO HARD TO DO THE RIGHT THING AT TIMES BUT YOU MUST KEEP TRYING. I SEE
OTHERS HAVE GIVEN YOU GREAT IDEAS ON HEALTHIER SNACK CHOICES. TRUST
ME...THEY REALLY WORK. I DO HAVE 1 MORE SUGGESTION....TRY FREEZING SOME
SEEDLESS GRAPES. THEY TASTE GREAT.

This is for Robert. When my kids get home from school they have a choice of
fruit, string cheese or a granola bar. On the weekends if we have a
sandwich my kids like to be normal people and have Doritos. There is
absolutely nothing wrong with that. And I don't feel like I'm setting
myself up for failure because of it. I got fussed at yesterday by my
surgeon at my 6 mo. post-op appointment for losing too fast, and I have had
Doritos in my house from Day 1!! What makes you think that that sets you
up for failure. I think it sets you up to be normal!! If I kept them out
of the house and I wanted them, it would make me want them more and more
until the craving was unbearable and then that would be setting me up for
failure. You always take a 'holier than thou' approach when answering the
posts, I wonder if you abide by your own rules!!

I don't think what you did is all that "BAD" I'm 1 year post op
and have lost 107lbs and am currently maintaing my goal weight. I have
from day 1 felt that If I want to eat a particular food even if its
"BAD" for you I should be able to enjoy it without guilt. We
need to stop placing such an emphasis on food, and just enjoy ourself. If
occassionaly you enjoy eating Doritos that's fine, as long as you are not
eating an entire bag every day!

Hi Peggy, first off what you did is not bad. We all have cravings, and
giving in to them here and there won't kill your weight loss efforts.
Personally, if I am craving something, I have it. If I deny myself then
that urge gets so strong that I wind up binging, and eating a whole lot
more then what I would have if I had just had a few in the first place. I
have 4 kids, So having junk food in the house is a reality. The poster
that said having goodies in the house is setting your kids up to be M.O is
wrong. That's why we are called parents. We parent our kids into making
choices and setting limits to what they can eat. Having junk food sometimes
is not bad, and making good choices about when to eat goodies, is a lesson
kids need to learn . My mom tried to limit all the goodies in our house
when I was a kid, you know what I did, I went to someone elses house and
ate goodies, LOL. So don't beat yourself up, buy your kids their stuff.
Chex mix, veggie chips, available at Costco, Pretzels, trail mix, air
popped popcorn, airbaked chips, are all good alternatives to Doritos. Best
wishes to you

Cheri: anyone who has raised kids knows that "forbidden fruit"
theory of child rearing only causes them to sneak it on the outside.
Robert only posts his cynical remarks to keep this site interesting.

I love this site - Fay's comment made me giggle a bit. I think your
incredibly brave to come right out and say something like this - don't
think I haven't snuck a little bit either and I'm only 5-weeks out. I do
believe it's normal but I believe your very unique in being able to state
it so openly - bravo for you for that !! Makes some of the rest of us
(believe me, they're will be plenty silent readers - non posters who will
be saying "yea, me too")stand up and shout - I'VE CHEATED SOME
TOO - and the other posters who have given us permission to not feel too
bad about it - God bless them ten-fold....gotta love this site. They've
had great success with the surgery and so will we - we'll do it together !!

I totally agree with Robert... up to a point. I quit buying Soda's and
Little Debbie is definately not my friend. My daughter and son, 10 and 13,
have both lost lbs by me doing this. we now eat sugarfree jello, friut, and
nuts. Popcorn is also a good one. For me if its in the house, I'll eat it.
I dont trust my self. Good habits I am teaching my kids. just my thoughts..
