Question:
I am constipated all the time!!

I just don't know what to do. My doctor said to take Citricell but I couldn't stand it and can't drink it all quick enough so I took doclolax. It's a very tiny pill and it worked in 3 hours for me LAST SATURDAY. Well, here I am past a week again and haven't moved my bowels since I took the laxative last week (it's been 10 days!). Am I going to have to take a laxative all the time or is it because I am not eating enough? Which, by the way, I need some protein ideas besides yogurt, tuna, eggs, cheese. Any sugestions ??    — Peggy D. (posted on May 14, 2002)

I was constipated for about a week. I took SugarFree Fiber Choice chewable tablets to reboot my system. They worked really well. I got mine at wal-mart; 10 tabs for $3 or 90 tabs for $10. As far as proteins, have you tried baked beans? I also eat lots of meats (hotdog, turkey pistrami, steak-ums, turkey...). Good luck balancing your diet. :)

Make sure you are getting in all your water. Also, you might try a little Natural Applesauce in your diet each day. I have also read that many doctors recommend Milk of Magnesia. Good Luck!

I'M NOT POST-OP BUT THE BEST THING FOR CONSTIPATION IS TO DRINK PLENTY OF WATER AND WALKING

Becareful with pills (stimulant laxatives) using them a lot can make you dependent on them... you might try the citricel or metamucil... but stick to a FIBER and natural laxative if you need one... Like others have said, water and walking will help. You need a lot of water to help that situation. Cheese, eggs and meat can bind you up. Someone suggested beans, and I agree. They are great for fiber and protein. Increase the fiber in your diet.

I have chronic constipation. My surgeon suggested Colace pills. These are a stool softener and work well. I take 3 a day. These are not a laxative, they just add water to your stool to soften it. My surgeon said these were safe to take on a daily basis.

I have also been having serious constipation issues. It was so bad on Saturday that I couldn't even pee. (Sorry to be so graphic) I took MOM and ended up using a suppository as well. Finally the suppository work...Thank God!! Since that time I have been taking sugar free FiberChoice chewable fiber supplements and so far so good! They are a bit pricey, but sooooo worth it. Not to mention that they are so yummy. They taste just like Orange Sweet Tarts. I am easily grossed out by chewable vitamins, tums, etc and I have no problems with these what so ever. Good luck!

Sugar-free Fiber Choice tablets work GREAT for me. I go every day, once, no problems, if I chew ONE tablet each night... rarely, I'll eat something that slows me down and I'll take two tablets to get me back on track. These tablets taste good and DO NOT swell in your pouch. They are about $10 for 60, and a bargain in my opinion. Keeping things moving is very important... more than four days between BMs, especially on a regular basis, and you are really upping your chances of developing colon cancer.

My surgeon suggests eating a couple of pieces of dried fruit (apricots, raisins, peaches or prunes) everyday to prevent constipation. It works great and they are tasty too. If you eat only a couple of pieces, you don't get too much sugar and they are high in fiber.

I've noticed that I'm much more regular now that I've been walking 5 days a week. I was told that walking tends to move things along in your system so they come out faster. I would tend to believe it!!

Becareful with not going for 10 days... you don't want to get impacted or a blockage. I too suffer and have recently started mixing benefiber with my afternoon protein drink. No taste, no grit, no nothing...just fiber!

Hi! I too had problems with constipation and was taking M.O.M every week just so I could go. I've found that if I take just a couple bites of fruit and/or veggies with my protein at meals it has helped tremendously. Also depending on ok from you Dr. popcorn is great at moving things along. ;-) Good Luck!
