Question:
Can anyone give feedback about how common it is for a postop leak?
I am still in the research phase of my WLS journey...I have an appointment next week with the surgeon, and have already been told that my surgery will be scheduled for mid-June if all goes okay. I have been reading so many things on the internet about leak tests, etc. and still don't fully understand what it all means. I would appreciate any info you all could give me. Thanks in advance. Less than 1% for open (like .8). Slightly higher for lap, but I don't know
the actual number.

Under 1 or 2% for either Lap or Open. All surgeons do a leak test on the OR
table and MOST do a follow up test a day or so later just for safety. Its a
YUK barium swallow. Well worth the hoops we have to go thru, I am down 134
pounds and lost it all:) My BMI is now 25 normal, as is ALL my previous
health problems ALL gone, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes, high
cholestrol, acid reflux, aching knees, ALL GONE! YOU CAN DO IT TOO! see my
profile!

I had a leak. I still have reflux. I still struggle with food volume...but
would I do it all again? Yup. Continue to research, research,
research...serious complications may be rare...but be as prepared as
*possible* for anything. Best of luck. -Kim open RNY 7/17 -103
