Question:
Can anyone give me an idea what they eat on a normal day? Just need some ideas!
I've been eating bad for so long I actually forget how to eat heathly..lol!!! I am a new post-op & just want to know what everyone's menu is like so I know what to plan for when I am past these liquid phases etc. I also wanted to get an idea of what to eat & maybe put some spice into it so I don't get bored with it. Also it would be helpful if you can tell me what satisfies you the most, tricks, secrets, what works best for you etc. I have no idea where to even start! — Allison T. (posted on April 20, 2002)

Allison - I am probably not the poster child for what to eat right, but
since my OPEN RNY last July, I have lost 91 pounds. I lose slowly, but am
pretty satisfied with my progress. Anyway, here's what I had yesterday,
for example:
Breakfast: 4 oz of my protein shake (125 cal/27 g. protein). Snack:
Biscotti (I usually have a cottage cheese double (cottage cheese w/fruit)
but I was in a cookie mood.). Lunch: Healthy Choice duo (turkey and
potatoes). I only ate a few bites of the taters..all the turkey. Snack: A
few Quakes rice cakes and a few pistachio nuts. Dinner: Great spinach
salad, 1 c. lentil soup (progresso) w/one slice low-fat Kraft cheese.
Snack: 15 frozen strawberries (thawed 30 seconds in micro) w/equal and 1/3
cup milk. This is a pretty standard menu for me. It's under 1500
calories. Secrets/tips? I like sugar free fudgesicles and frozen
strawberries. Oh, I forgot, I ate 3 rolos yesterday (about 24 calories
each) - more than that makes me sick... and I did drink a non-fat latte
from Starbucks. Honestly, if people didn't know I had the surgery, they
could never tell from what I eat! Over the past two montns (I'm now nine
months out - so, months seven to nine), I have been losing on the average
of 1.69 pounds a week. Of course, I lost much quicker early on - but 1.69
pounds a week at 9 months is okay with me. I'm not toooo flabby on the
skin sags....and I'm not feeling deprived. My BEST advice...because it is
working so well for me...log onto FitDay.com and see how that site might
help you manage. I come here for the motivation -- and I go there for
application! Good luck to you. OPEN RNY 7/17/01, -91, 46 to go.

Just as a suggestion to posters: tell what kind of surgery you had...there
are more than one and the diet varies by doctor. I had a duodenal switch
5/00 and have lost 214 pounds so far without "dieting". Yesterday
was my 44th birthday: I ate out for lunch and dinner, thanks to some good
friends, but here is a sample: 7am a blueberry Dannon yogurt and a banana.
9am about 2 oz of liversausage, mayo and 8 saltines. noon: a
grapefruit/cranberry juice, 1/2 of a huge roast beef au jus sandwich on a
french roll, with about 12 french fry. 2pm, the other half of the
sandwich. 4pm about 12 baby carrots and dill dip. 6pm four 4" lamb
kaftas (a middle eastern lamb sausage roll), about 1/2 cup of rice, about 1
1/2 c of salad with oil and vinegar, and 4 cups of carrot-beet juice. 9pm
6 pieces of Godiva chocolate (compliments of my sweet baboo, who brought me
flowers and a box of candy: the first guy EVER to do such a thing!!!) Good
Luck to you!

ALLISON, MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH HAD THE SAPALA-WOOD MICROPOUCH, MATT IS 3
MONTHS POST OP AND I AM 2 MONTHS POST OP.
ON A TYPICAL DAY I START OUT WITH A PROTEIN SHAKE,
THEN I EAT BREAKFAST AN HOUR OR SO LATER, USUALLY IT IS 1 SCRAMBLED EGG OR
1/2 CUP TOTAL CEREAL W/SPLENDA.
I USUALLY HAVE A CUP OF ORANGE PINEAPPLE JUICE AS MY NEXT MEAL, I HAVE A
REALLY HARD TIME GETTING IN SOLID FOODS AT EACH MEAL SO JUICE IS A GREAT
WAY TO GET NUTRITION W/ OUT EATING SOMTHING I DONT WANT.
FOR A LUNCH I MIGHT EAT A PIECE OF STRING CHEESE OR TWO AND A PEICE OF DELI
MEAT.
AND DINNER IS A PEICE OF MEAT(CHICKEN, OR BEEF, ANYTHING I LIKE) AND A
SMALL SALAD.
I HAVE POPCORN IN THE EVENING SOMETIMES AS A SNACK OR A SUGAR FREE COOKIE,
OR EVEN A LITTLE SUGAR FREE ICE CREAM!! I FEEL LIKE I EAT ALOT BUT WHEN I
COUNT UP THE CALORIES I HAVE EATEN IT IS NOT ENOUGH, I ALSO FIT ANOTHER
PROTEIN SHAKE IN SOMEWHERE BETWEEN LUNCH AND DINNER. I HOPE THIS HELPS, I
WAS SO CONFUSED WHEN I STARTED OUT, THIS PLACE HELPED ME ALOT!!

I am almost 7 months out from open RNY. I usuall start my day off with a
protein bar (easier to get my pills in with), for lunch I might eat another
one or drink a protein shake, for supper I eat 1 - 1 1/2 cups of food,
whatever I cooked. I might have a snack or two throughout the day,
sunflower seeds (in the shell), cheese stick, fruit cup (in light syrup),
or a bananna. I can't say my diet is exciting, but I'm comfortable with
it, and I do try new things all the time. In the last month or so, I have
noticed that things that I couldn't tolorate well as a newbie have started
staying down a little better. Good Luck :)

Allison: I am 13.5 months post-op. On an average day, I would have 1
scrambled egg and 1 piece of toast for breakfast (usually with a tomato
slice on top), a Lean Cuisine or turkey sandwich for lunch, a piece of
fruit for an afternoon pick me up and either fish or chicken, rice &
vegees for dinner. Total calorie intake is about 1200-1500.

Hi Alison,
I am 10 weeks out, down 41 pounds. For breakfast, I eat 1 scrambled egg
with 1 slice of melted cheese and a tablespoon of chili on top. Lunch
varies from a salad with grilled chicken to tuna salad or crab salad on
crackers to 1/2 of a chicken burrito with cheese on top. Dinner lately has
been a Lean Cuisine, which I can eat 1/2 of, or rotisserie chicken, or
veggie meatballs with cheese or some salmon. I usually have a few bites of
vegetable with dinner. Tonight is Turkey meatloaf with a steamed veggie.
I try to get in a protein shake a day and/or 1/2 of a protein bar. I allow
myself one late night carb snack, sometimes Soy chips, which have protein
in them, or popcorn, or sometimes strawberries with cool whip or pistachio
nuts. I figure I get in between 800 and 1000 calories a day. I'm a slow
loser, but thats OK with me. I'm still losing, and I feel like I am eating
very well.
