Question:
For people who have a morphine allergy: what did they give you for pain & was it ok?
I have heard that morphine is a great drug, but coedine and vicodin make me really itchy so I don't think that they will give it to me. I am wondering if anyone has had this allergy, and then what did they put into the PCA pump? Was it a good drug? Were you in any pain at all? Did it make you really disoriented or dizzy? Thanks- I am so scared of pain. — Jennifer Y. (posted on March 16, 2002)

This is such a wonderful question. I have the same problem and it's nice
to know that I'm not alone. Codeine and Percocet makes me very itchy. But
I didn't know that I couldn't have morphine....so now I'm scared. Is
Demerol just as good? I know zip about pain killers, but know that I can't
handle the pain.

There's another one, too. I think it's called Toredol, or something like
that. It was ok, but I'm fortunate to have a high tolerance for pain, and
I don't like that foggy feeling you get from those drugs, so I really
didn't use the pump very much.

I am allergic to Vicodin and I found out that I had a morphine allergy when
I had my WLS. That was not fun! They gave me demerol which they injected
into my IV bag... Demerol is VERYYYYYYYYY good... (big huge grin on my
face!) Percocet is also an alternative. I am not sure if I had percocet
or not.

I to am allergic to morphine, it almost made me have a stroke as it raised
my blood pressure so high! I have had 5 abdominal surgery's and evertime
they give mr Demerol and phenegren for nausea they compliment each other!
Vicodine percocet and all of those make me break out in a rash! I have had
Torodal but does not relieve the pain as well as Demerol does at least for
me. Hope this helped a little. God's Speed

Funny how we all have various reactions to all the good pain meds. I had
morphine pre-op when I had my gall bladder out. The had demerol in my PCA
post-op. It was great for the pain the first day, but when I got ready to
go to sleep, I started having weird hallucinations. Not scary so much,
just really weird. I mentioned it to the nurse and she said it was the
demerol. Fortunately I was able to go to oral pain meds the next day.
There are several things they can give you, so if one of them doesn't agree
with you, let them know. They can also try something else.

Just be sure and tell them of ALL your drug allergies.
There are so many different things they can use to help control your pain
that I would'nt worry about it. ;)
