Question:
Will Facial Hair be less after I lose the weight?
Since my hysterectomy 8 years ago, I have grown facial hair under my chin. The bigger I got in weight, the worse the facial hair problem gets. I "pluck" almost every single day, sometimes twice. My doctor is curious to see if, as I lose the weight after surgery, if this will ease up and the facial hair won't be so bad. He said that something with fat creates more male hormones or some caca like that...anyone experienced anything like this? Before or after? Results? Thanks for the help. — [Anonymous] (posted on March 6, 2002)

There is a correlation between fatty cells and hormones. I have Poly Cystic
Ocarian Syndrome, which can go away with weight loss. One of its side
effects is facial hair (due to a hormone imbalance- too much testosterone).
It kinda sounds like your body is missing its estrogen, and testosterone is
taking over. Bad news, the facial hair once grown, won't go away. Good
news, you shouldn't grow more!! Your doc should REALLY be able to tell you
better. I know I don't have the logistics down very well, maybe if you look
up PCOS, it will explain the correlation between the fatty cells and
hormones better, even though that isn't your problem- it's worth a try.
Hope I didn't make you even more confused...

Thanks for posting this question, been thinking about it myself. I haven't
been diagnosed with poly cystic ovarian syndrome or had a hysterectomy
either. But I have more than my share of facial hair on my chin and neck!
According to my OB/GYN, PCP and my dermatologist it is due to obesity and
the effect it has on your hormones (yes, the caca about male hormones,
hence my fertility issues etc). I am sad to read the previous post saying
that it won't go away following WLS. Whaaaaa! but i guess i'll keep
plucking away. there is a fairly good depilatory cream out there called
"surgi-cream" but my sensitive skin can't handle it. therefore
tweezing is my only option until i become rich as well as thin (ha!) and
can afford electrolysis.

A Hysterectomy will not affect your PCOS if you indeed have it- since it is
a Endocrine Disorder. Get with a Endo, ASAP. Your PCP, and GYNO may not
know squat about PCOS, and you may have some issues that need to be
addressed (not just cosmetic!) I also have a website listed on my profile
that lists all the symptoms. Good luck.
