Question:
I'm 4.5 weeks how many grams of protein, and how many calories... .

and water should I be getting? My doctor's papers talk in term of tablespoons of food. It states 4-6 8 oz glasses of water and doesn't mention calories. Yesterday I decided to weigh my food and get in 2 oz of protein at a time and really concentrate on eating since I'm worried my body isn't letting go for starvation reasons. I can't stomach protein drinks. When I weighed my food I realized I had not been getting in near as much protein as I had previously thought. I managed to get in 950 calories yesterday. I had probably been getting in 500-600 prior to that. I can't understand how the body isn't foced to release this weight. One ounce of lean meat or fish has about 7 grams of protein in it. So two ounces of lets say shrimp has 14 grams of protein. At one month post op... you could be eating a little tuna mixed with low fat mayonnaise or chopped shrimp mixed with a little low fat mayonnaise... if you have a small food processor it will work great to make a smoother consistency salad... mix in a little Old Bay seasoning and a little finely chopped scallion for flavor... tastes great and is easy to eat. I would eat Progresso Black Bean Soup or Pea Soup or Navy Bean soup... or if you know how to cook, make a little homemade black bean soup and puree it so it isnt that chunky or Pinto Beans or lentils cooked with a piece of smoked turkey and half an onion until smooth and tasty. Think soft textured foods, like sugar free puddings with some protein powder mixed in, cottage cheese with some Sugar Free Smuckers jam swirled in it. You are at a rough stage at one month post op. Just tolerate it the best you can... because this is the worst month for food... very frustrating. Try some string cheese and some Cabot brand Low Fat Vermont Cheddar cheese... very good too. Do the best you can and you should try some other brands of protein powder such as Zero Carb Isopure in Creamy Vanilla... it is delicious, I make a shake every day and I am 8 months post op. I can make a Pina Colada shake that tastes like it came from Dairy Queen!

Ronnie-Should I have said meat? I consider meat a protein. 2 oz of ground roast chicken is what I was mostly eating. I forgot to add in my post that I have been on a plateau for 2 weeks and have lost 21 pounds since the surgery. I walk 30 minutes a day for exercise. I'm looking for recommendations of grams of protein and calories a day if anyone knows since my doctor only states how many tablespoons of each food group I should have. Also how much water most doctor's advise. Perhaps all doctors go by tablespoons of food I'm just checking.

My dr. said do not be concerned about the number of calories, but to eat my protein and eat frequently: protein, then veggies, then fruit. Frequency of meals will elevate the metabolism.

Oh My!!! I thought that I was alone. I am 4 weeks post op, and eating sucks. I never thought I would say those words, but it is so much trouble. I cannot stand protein supplements either, if I smell it I throw up. I am having starvation problems as well. I can only seem to get 200-300 calories a day (and that's me really trying hard). My doctor says I need to get up to 800, I'm trying. I hope protein is absorbed from food, because I do eat protein first. The problem is I cannot eat enough food to get enough protein. I did force a protein shake down once, but over a course of 30 minutes I could only fit 2oz. in. So I got a total of 6 grams of protein for all my misery. I am supposed to get 60 grams of protein a day, in my dreams, unless they start giving injections for it. I don't know how much I have lost to date, but two weeks ago I had lost 23 pounds. If you come up with a solution for all this email me.
