Question:
Could I need to be dilated at 4 weeks post op?
I am 4 weeks post-op. I can't keep anything down. I was able to keep water down until this afternoon...and I even threw that up! My dr. seems so reluctant to dilate this early....why would that be?? Is there a concern about dilating too early? I'm so discouraged. :-( — Julle N. (posted on February 13, 2002)

I was dialated at exactly 4 weeks post op. My surgeon said that at 3-5
weeks is the optimum time for scar tissure to form and obstruct the stoma.
I too could not keep nothing down, not even water. It is not a bad
procedure at all, and well worth it. I suggest you contact your surgeon
ASAP because you are in danger of dehydration.

I'm just shy of being 4 weeks post-op RNY, and I have been dilated twice.
The first being one week after surgery, and again just today. The risk of
having a perforation is higher, but still very uncommon, but I think
dehydration is worse. The whole procedure is very harmless, and besides
having a rough throat for a few hours, I didn't feel a thing.....But
BETTER!!

I had a friend who was dialated about 4 weeks out, she could not keep
ANYTHING down, she was miserable, she wanted a reversle! Got the procedure
done, and, at 5 months post op. she has lost about 125 pounds. You know
your body. WE have to be our own advocate.
