Question:
What is a divided gastic bypass?
Hi, I just got an e-mail from my Dr. I have been having pain in my left side and I am 10 mos out -131lbs. I was really concerned because I gained 5 lbs. But the doctor told me it is impossible for me to have a staple line disruption because I have a DIVIDED GASTRIC BYPASS. WHAT IS THAT? HELP!! — lynbaby B. (posted on February 8, 2002)

Basically, they either staple your stomach to separate it, or they actually
cut your stomach (transect or divide it). In your case, your doctor is
saying you can't have a staple line disruption, because he actually
transected your stomach. Make sense?

It is a good thing that your stomach was transected, by the way. Stomachs
that are merely left in place and divided by a staple line can develop a
leak months to YEARS after the surgery. They started doing the transection
version of the surgery as a fix to this complication.
