Question:
Has anyone had experience with other surgeries post-op RNY?
I have been approved for Hip Replacement surgery the first part of February 2002. I am a little scared and wonder if anyone has experience with anesthesia (sp) and pain control meds after surgery. My RNY was Lap, so I did not experience what full surgery patients do. Any help, advice, or whatever would help calm my nerves. Also, my surgeon knows nothing about RNY. (He does know I've had it and what it involved). Is there much I need to educate him on? Thanks so much. — Dot W. (posted on January 16, 2002)

Hello, I just had to have surgery to correct a bowel obstruction about 4
weeks ago. This was done by the surgeon that did my RNY, but I think that
maybe you should suggest to the surgeon that is doing the hip replacement
to contact the surgeon that did the RNY, just to make sure that he knows
what he needs to know. My original surgery was open, and my most recent
surgery was open as well. He opened up half of my original incision and
extended it some more. I did find that I needed more medicine in regards
to pain control, but I don't know if that was actually from the surgery or
from the bowel obstruciton itself. They were both abdominal surgeries, so
I don't have any experience with hip replacements. Maybe you can call the
surgeon that did your RNY himself, and let him know that you are having hip
replacement surgery. Then ask him if there are any special circumstances
that you should be aware of. Good luck in your surgery and recovery. I
hope all goes well.
