Question:
Fatigue and Circles --Oh My!!

I'm at 6.5 weeks post-op and am VERY tired all the time. I've been good at getting my vites, h2o, iron, walking and protein in...but still feel very weathered. I've also noticed dark circles around my eyes... My surgery ended up being 2 surgeries--one as a lap which couldn't be finished due to a tumor that was biopsied, then an open rny 2 weeks later. I'm wondering if it's the double does of anesthesia? My surgeon thinks I'm on track however. Anyways, I am so open to suggestions from you seasoned vets... tell me it gets better please..and the circles go away! Thanks for your wisdom!    — Kathleen T. (posted on November 28, 2001)

Yes, Kathleen, it definately does get better! You didn't say how many grams of protein you are getting now, but I would suggest that you boost it way up. Try getting it up to 75 grams and see if you don't feel much much much better. Whenever my energy lags, I immediately start dosing on the protein supplement. One scoop(not two like the label says.) One scoop three times a day and you will feel like a new woman, I promise.

Can you get some labs done this week? Then you'd know. Is it iron? Is it B12? Is it protein? Compare these numbers to your pre-op numbers and it'll tell you if you are sliding downhill. You can be within "normal" ranges and still "feel" bad. I think the technical term they usually use for us is that our labs are "fine". Get numbers. What kind of iron are you taking? How are you taking it? Those can all make a difference.
