Question:
HELP! Will change in thyroid medication upset my levels before surgery?
UGH! I just went to the pharamacy to pick up my Levoxyl (for hypothyroidism) and it is no longer made. It has been replaced by a medicine called "Unithroid" and is the same mcg (125) as my Levoxyl. I seem to recall some people saying that their levels were "messed up" when they changed thyroid medications...and my surgery is SUPPOSEDLY in 6 weeks! ACK! What do I do? All suggestions GREATLY appreciated! *smile* (P.S. Of course the pharmacist told me it would be fine. Phooey to him, although I hope he's right! LOL) — Cristie L. (posted on October 27, 2001)

I don't know the answer to your question but I am also on Levoxyl and I
didn't know they no longer make it. I also
have problems trying to take it because you have to take it so many hours
after or before eating and it doesn't work very well with having to eat
every 3-1/2 to 4 hours.

Sorry to say I'm in Pa, and i just bought my levoxyl .175 mcg and they
still make it. Perhaps your insurance comp. won't pay for your levoxyl,
that is why they changed it.

Levoxyl is still made. Technically Levoxyl is a generic. I work for a
pharmacy...and we have also stopped using levoxyl because of the cost. You
should check with your doctor to see if he/she wants you on this new
thyroid med. From what I know, all of the thyroid meds don't work exactly
the same for everyone. If you are uncomfortable with the new thyroid meds
you should call around to your local pharmacies and see if they stock
Levoxyl or if they can order it for you.
