Well, you are five years older and metabolisms change. Since it seems like a sudden change monitoring and checking with your Dr should be high on the list, but it is also possible that age is happening. Hormone shifts begin and can affect weight, among a myriad of things. In our late 40's perimenopause can be a thing and it can have profound sudden changes on our bodies. Are you experiencing any of the other common effects?
Yikes that looks scary! I too had Really bad ? unexplained? bruising a few weeks ago which totally disappeared after i took iron gummies ( i was severely anemic) .
I havent taken K lately but its always a good idea to occasionally supplement that - it keeps your leg veins flexible and makes burst capillaries and varicose vein?s dramatically disappear ( the cream does that too instantly and even better)
I buy both cream and pills at the Vitamin Store and alternate between k1 abd k2 .
I would be making an appointment at the doctors then. If nothing at all has changed something is going on with your body. People don't just gain weight for no reason unless there is something medically wrong or they are eating more calories.
I haven't seen anything change eating or exercising-wise. The only difference is I'm coming up on the fifth year since my surgery.
Literally nothing has changed. I'm eating /exercising exactly the same as always.
So I lost about 120 pounds with DS (I'm 5' 11" and was pre-diabetic with severe sleep apnea, starting weight 279 and at my lowest I was 150). My doctor expected that I would put 25 pounds of it back on. I stayed pretty consistent at 155 to 160 for the last five years. (Had my surgery at the end of October 2017.)
But literally within the last few weeks my weight has been creeping up. I started being between 160 to 165, then 165 to 170 and suddenly find myself at 175 to 180. I'm technically overweight again with my BMI at 180. 170 to 180 would put me at that 25 pounds regain that was expected to be put back on.
Is there any way to get this weight off? I'm noticing that my clothes are a bit too tight and I'm a little unhappy with the extra weight. Am I going to plateau at some point? Or am I in a downward spiral where I'm going to keep putting on weight?
Something has changed in the last few weeks. What have you been eating? How much have you been eating?
I have taken a number of different supplements over the years. Solgar, Nature Made and NOW are all good standard brands. There are others, I don't think the brand matters much. My long time Internist agreed with the poster above who said the fancy brands are just expensive, not better. If I can get it at Costco I do ; )
It isn't even clear to me that the water misible fat solubles are much better than the standard versions. They may be, but there isn't much data out there and mostly it involves patients taking pancreatic enzymes along with the supplements, to facilitate processing the ADEKs.
The rest is heresay, marketing claims and individual experiences which don't amount to a hill of beans scientifically.
As you observed, the blood panels are the final baseline. If they are good, you are good, if not, time to adjust. And if you don't feel well? Get checked. Your body will tell you when something is wrong.
The zinc deficency was caught because my hair was coming out by the gobbets and I just didn't believe it was hormones and peri-menopause...

Thank you for sharing, and for your feedback. It sounds like you've had quite the journey over the past 20+ years with the DS. It's a good reminder to stay current on bloodwork. You can't address what you don't know about!
It's good to see your list for reference. You've got a pretty robust regimen and I appreciate hearing your story a bit as someone who is experienced in adapting to the changes from surgery. I'm taking notes!

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!
I won't be taking aspirin. The only thing I take now and again is Tylenol. I'll talk to my clinic when I see them in a few weeks. When I called the dietician and nurse the other day for a follow up, they reiterated that there isn't a K supplement. I really do think they just don't sell one and write it off. Are you willing to share which supplement you take for K?
Literally I was told to eat more leafy greens to boost the numbers but not to eat fat with them for absorption. It's...interesting. This was my first round of blood work that included the fat soluble vitamins, so I don't have a baseline for before surgery. I won't leave it! Just trying to find a healthy mix between following my clinic guidelines and getting my levels up. Appreciate you!
