Question:
Will I still need someone at home with me 9 days post op

I am having surgery on a Tuesday and my daughter will be leaving the following Wednesday. Assuming no serious complications, will I need someone with me all the time after that.    — faybay (posted on October 1, 2001)

HELLO FAYE, I MYSELF STILL HAVE MY MOM W/ME THOUGH SHE CAME FROM THE NORTH. I HAD SURGERY ON THE 14TH, AND SHE IS STAYING A LIL LONGER oCT. 6TH. EVEN THOUGH I WOULD BE O.K.I THINK IT DEPENDS ON WHETHER YOU HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN TO BE BATHED,LIFTED, OR IF YOUR MARRIED, YOUR SPOUSE WILL HELP OUT. MINE DOES THANK GOODNESS, BUT IT HAS BEEN GREAT HAVING SUPPORT HERE THROUGHOUT THE DAY, OR EVEN TO LIFT A HEAVY CLOTHES BASKET. CHEERS...

Hi Fay. I had surgery a week ago today (open RNY). I have a 20 month old son, and I'm married. When my husband goes to work, he takes our son to daycare so I've been alone during the weekdays. Everything is fine for me when I'm alone. I don't need help. However, when my son is home, my husband takes care of him and cooks his own meals (although I could). My belief is that the more you can do for yourself the better (aside from heavy lifting, cleaning etc). The more you move around and walk, the quicker you will heal. Just be sure not to strain yourself and especially your abdominal area. Good luck!

I was discharged on a Friday after an open RNY. My husband was home until the following Tuesday when he went back to work. I did fine by myself. I was able to shower and change my dressing and put the binder back on. Before surgery I moved things that I would need to the lowest shelf in my cabinets so I wouldn't have to stretch too much. I think you would do fine after 9 days.

Faye, I'm 5 days out from Open RNY Conversion, been home 2 days, and today is my first day alone, well, from 1pm till midnite. I'm doing fine. I agree with what someone else said about doing things for yourself. I'm weak, but fine. Pain is negligible. I do tend to drop stuff constantly, but if it's something I absolutely have to have, I CAN retrieve it. If not, I'll wait till my husband gets home! Best wishes.

I went from the hospital to my parents house after RNY. I am single so I don't have anyone to help me out. At exactly 9 days post op, I went home and didn't have a problem at all. Anything I needed, I could do on my own. You'll be fine. And good luck on your big day :>)
