Question:
Does anyone use Slim Fast? Do they have anything Sugar Free?

I'm just wondering if RNY patients use this, and if so, do you dump on it?    — rhonda2u (posted on June 4, 2002)

I have not had the procedure yet, waiting on a surgery date. I actually went to purchase slim fast this weekend and was unable to find any suger free in my area, but I noticed that the Slimfast does contain a lot of carbohydrates and not enough protein, which is what the surgeons DO NOT WANT. I would check your local wal-mart and see what else is available (be sure to read the label) or even go to a nutrition store. I have also seen some really good recipes for using 8oz. skim milk, a few tabelspoons of skim milk powder and fresh fruit, as well as using a few tabelspoons of fat free yogurt or pudding to thicken. THis recipe is higher in protein and really cuts the carbs and sugar and increases the protein content I hope this helps. Jennifer E.

Slim Fast is a no-no. There are better drinks out there that are sugar free and low in carbs. Go to your local GNC, or check out vitalady.com - they have lots to choose from and you can get samples before commiting to a certain brand. Not everything tastes good to everyone - - what I like may taste terrible to you. Best to taste for yourself. Stay away from Slim Fast and get a drink that is higher in protein, and lower in carbs.

Slim Fast now makes a sugar free (made with fructose) soy shake. You just add water (which makes it easy to carry and mix on the run) and it has a pretty high protein content. It tastes better than most protein shakes. I got it at Wal-Mart

I would suggest skipping the Slim-Fast and go for the low-carb, high protein shakes like AdvantEdge,Carb Solutions, or Atkins. The already made shakes are very good you can get them cheaper if you order them over the internet. I just ordered Atkins shakes from, www.thebetterhealthstore.com, and they were cheaper than the Atkins website. They were $8.99 for four cans, not cheap, but I like them better than powder. Good luck!

I am about seven months postop now. I realize that SlimFast is not high in protein, higher in sugars and no sure on the carbs but when it comes down to whether I "graze" on something which might not be good at all for me, I'd rather have a SlimFast meal replacement bar. I figure it is better then some of the choices I have made in regards to a protein bar. I've found most protein bars taste just awful in taste. The only one I've found recently that I think I like is the Protein Eight which I purchased at GNC. Hope this helps some.

Slim Fast is about the same as drinking Nestle Quick when it comes to sugar. Read the label an how much sugar and how little protien it actually has. Many post-ops actually end up dumping on drinks like slim fast, boost or ensure because of the high sugar content. You are better off going with a low carb drink. I like carb solutions powder (available at Wal-mart) or the Edge premix boxes (also at walmart). If you don't like those try Atkins, Designer Protien or others, but watch the sugar content.
