I had a lap BPD/DS and had IBS before --- My problem was constipation, not diahhrea, though. And, I had spastic colon. My symptoms have dramatically lessened after the surgery. I also had my gallbladder removed and did experience a lot of upper right quadrant pain (only diagnosed with huge gallstones but no gallbladder disease, eetc.). All of this vanished after surgery! I do get spastic colon and more frequently bowels (maybe 3-5 times/day) when I am really, really stressed out. Otherwise, I have 1-2 movements upon waking and that's it for the day! :) All the best, lap ds, January 25, 2001, preop: 307 lbs/bmi 45/now: 184 lbs/bmi 26

I had very serious IBS prior to surgery. I had a Lap RNY on 2/25/02 and now I'm off my medication for the IBS. I have also stopped having to use Immodium like I did before.

I had IBS for almost 15 years before my lap RNY. The IBS disappeared the day of my surgery and has not been a problem in the 26 months since....what a blessing! Good luck!

I have just been diagnosed with microscopic colitis (MC). My surgeon knows about my diarrea problems, but does not know what the diagnosis is yet.My surgeon is hesitant to do any surgery on me saying that he wanted to make sure that the surgery would make the MC worse. I am hoping that he will not feel that the MC will be a future problem. Thank you to the others that posted their response. You have given me hope also. My gastro doc put me on Asacol 12 tablets 4 times a day, has helped greatly. The MC supposedly can go into remission also.

I too had IBS symptoms for 15 years -- diarrhea that was so urgent and unexpected I could not eat at all during the day if I was going to be in the field at work. An unexpected side effect of my lap BPD/DS 2 1/2 yrs ago was total relief of this problem. I always have to roll my eyes when I hear the urban legend that the DS CAUSES uncontrollable diarrhea. For me, like Theresa, the DS has completely cured my diarrhea and greatly improved the quality of my life. I too have 1 - 2 BMs immediately upon rising and very occasionally (if I've eaten a LOT of crap during the day) will have another BM when I get home from work -- no rush or urgency.

I had terrible IBS prior to my surgery and it has dramatically been reduced. I have had a couple of bouts in the last 9 months since surgery but the frequency and intensity have greatly improved. I am very happy this was a positive side effect to my surgery.
