Question:
HELP!! Please respond quick... regarding throwing up.

I leave to see my Surgeon for a 2 week post op appointment. I have had a hard day today, my first. (I had RNY). All I had today was 1 cup coffee, then I had some of my protein shake. I couldn't finish it cause I got a lot of bubbles in my pouch making me feel ill. I tried to burp, but only a little bit burped out. Then, I threw up. Everything. All the protein shake I did drink, hours earlier came back up. I feel a lot better now though. Do you think I have narrowed yet? This is the first time I threw up, but the umteenth time I felt like this. I have a hard time drinking anything but the coffee. Lots of bubbles. Eating seems to be alright. Is there any specific question I should ask him? Thanks for a speedy reply! Annie    — Annie R. (posted on August 23, 2001)

Annie---I'm having a bad day today too. I had something for lunch I've had many times before with no problem, but it came back up. Now I've just felt queasy for hours, and can't even drink a glass of water right now. I think this is the second day this has happened in 2 months. I really think you are probably a little early to have to worry about narrowing. There are all kinds of other considerations: drinking too fast, drinking too close to the last time you drank. I think I would just tell you doctor about it. They usually ask (I think) if there was anything you had any problems with. He'll probably tell you to just try it again. Some things just don't go well with our tummies at certain times, but are fine others. Go figure. Good luck to you.

It is not to early to worry about the outlet narrowing, mine almost closed at 2 1/2 weeks then again a month later, I am now 6 months post op and not had any other problems...better ask him and tell him everything....they might just want to do a scope to see.

Hi Anne, I had LAP RNY on July 20th...I was fine until the 3rd week when all of sudden, I was throwing up for 3 days in a row, I went to the emergency room and they found a bowel obstruction. The obstruction was less than 2 cm and the Dr said it would clear up on its own. THey gave me some nausea medicine. That was 2 week ago and Im still dealing with nausea but not as extreme. I can barely eat and am a little remorseful over going through with the procedure. Im sure I wont regret it 6 months from now. Im able to drink fruit smoothies and juice and am experimenting with different foods. It hit or miss. Im sticking to my smoothies and juice for now. Total weight loss is 27lbs since 7/20/01.

If you have frequent nausea, definitely see if you can get some Prevacid, Carafate, or other medicines to help. Also, coffee might not be the best thing to drink at this stage, it's fairly acidic and can upset your stomach. You need to do water before coffee. Good luck

Anne, I had open RNY on April 17 of this year. I totally understand how you feel. For at least 2 1/2 weeks I could hardly eat. I lost 32 pounds in 15 days. The bubbles were so uncomfortable and nothing at all helped me. I even made myself throw up just to releave the feeling. Everyone told me that I would feel good by my 6th week, and it was difficult to believe, but it's true. The best advice I can give you is to hang in there, let your doctor know how you feel, and believe you will feel better soon. Remember your insides have to heal and it was major surgery. It's been 4 months now, I've lost 64 pounds and I can eat mostly anything, just in very small amounts. The "bubbles" will go away! I am thinking of you.

Warm drinks, like herb tea or just plain hot water seem to help sometimes. Pepermint tea was especially helpful for me. Good luck.
