Question:
Anyone not had Provera work after missed periods? No period in 6 months (15month p/o)

I haven't had my period in almost 6 months, cannot be exact b/c its been so long. I'm 23 and 15 months post-op. I surpassed my goal weight and am happy to be 125#, I assume weight loss has had something to do with this, but I'm starting to get worried. My GYN put me on Provera, but almost 2 weeks after taking all the pills- still no period! I am going to see her again, but wondering if any of you have had similar experiences. I've had ovarian cysts before, painful but not serious, so I was put on birth control. PLan to go on the patch (ortho evra) soon, but need a period first. Could this be a sign of something more serious? I know not getting your period is very bad for your bones. Thanks!    — Lezlie Y. (posted on August 12, 2003)

Once upon a time, at age 19 I went through a very bad emotional year, and lost so much weight I was considered anorexic at a weight of 117. I was gaunt and told I did not have enough body fat, hence no period for over a year. Check into this... could be you've lost more than you should for your height and body type. Just a theory.

Oops! Sorry, I forgot your original question about provera. I was not put on provera, but as soon as I gained 5 lbs, I started my period.

Are you talking about regular Provera? or Depo-Provera birth control shot? Read the package insert your doctor should have given you. I know with Depo-Provera 50% or more of women don't have a period with it. I know I didn't for 6 years. If you're talking about regular Provera (different animal) then ignore my post and read your information. ;)

Hi Lezlie- Several years ago, I was put on provera (not deproprovera) for menstral problems. I would either have a period that went on for months, or not have my period for many months. During a "dry" spell, my OBGYN prescribed the provera. It didn't work. He had me do another round, and I got the period from hell that wouldn't stop. I had to have a D&C due to the buildup of my uterine lining. My OBGYN had me put under (anesthesia) because I had a very bad case of buildup. But if your situation leads to this, don't worry. The pain factor wasn't bad at all, only a couple of days after the D&C were like a crampy period. After this, I had a normal period and was able to start birth control pills. I am a new woman now, with regular, painless periods :o) Good Luck, Mea

Pre op i used provera a couple times a year as to initiate a period. Most times it worked only after 5 days other times it wouldn't work at all. There could be a number of reasons why your not responding, your body has gone through many changes just follow up with your GYN.

I've taken provera a few times to bring on periods when I was pre-op. (I have PCO). Most of the time it took 2 weeks and I think once it took 3 weeks. So it might still show. You might want to just call your GYN and ask her what they consider to be a long time for provera to work to put your mind at ease before you get to see her again. Good Luck, Lisa open rny 4/26/02 -151lbs
