Question:
BCBS ins pay to get excess skin from arms and legs?

Can a person get their insurance company pay for removal of excess skin from arms and legs? How? I am asking this question on behalf of my aunt that is almost 1yr post op and has almost reached her goal weight of 130lbs. Does anyone know how much these surgeries cost? How much? You can email me with info at [email protected]. Thanks    — Bonnie S. (posted on February 26, 2001)

Unless the loose skin is causing a medical problem I don't believe they will. I am having 2 hernia's repaired next week and I am having a tummy tuck also, because of loose skin. I will be paying for this myself. I have BCBS

I am 40 lbs from my goal and in the early stages of plastic surgery research. I have BCBS and my policy states it will cover reconstructive procedures but not cosmetic. It all depends on how the procedures are coded and proving medical necessity for reconstruction. I posted a position paper on the message board this morning that describes how to get the insurance company to pay. What I am learning from many members is that a lot of surgeons don't want to mess with insurance companies and would rather have self-pay patients or provide patients with financing plans. Costs surely differ with region. I have heard $5,200 for abdominoplasty and $1,600 for brachioplasty locally. Cost also depends on the extent of the procedure, so will differ from patient to patient. Good luck.
