Question:
What are the rules on eating nuts?

I love pistachios and sunflower seeds and I know they would be a good source of protien for me. I have a hard time getting in my protien. I can't stomach those protien powders and stuff and right now I'm having trouble eating. Would I be able to eat nuts, I'm 2 months post-op and have lost 72#. I would appriciate any help you all could give me.    — Linda M. (posted on August 2, 2000)

Linda, I don't think there are any rules for eating nuts. However, what does your surgeon say? As long as you CHEW- you should be fine. Also, I would measure them out instead of eating them out of a bag or can, so you know exactly how much you are eating. Otherwise, you may end up grazing on them all day. Remember, too, nuts can be high in fat and that may give you a tummy ache (high fat does that to me, but as long as I only eat high fat occasionally, I am ok), and high fat may slow down your weight loss. Good Luck!

I Love my pumpkin seeds! I also like the process of shelling them...it gives me something to do that takes a long time...like smoking, something with your hands etc. I buy a bag and make it last two days. I'm in my 7th month and not sure if nuts will work without jamming you up earlier...but I think they are great snack and source of protein. I tried jerky earlier in my recovery because so many said it was a good snack...it got stuck and i got sick...i just can't get myself to eat that anymore. Another thing you might try is soy nuts. They have them in different flavors. I've lost 99 pounds and am living happily ever after...nuts and all

I had to wait 8 weeks before I was allowed to eat nuts.

I started peanuts at 2 months post-op. Just chew and it should be ok.

I am three months post-op and discovered one of the foods I can eat (I have had lots of problems tolerating many foods) is peanuts. Honey roasted peanuts taste great, fill me quickly, and have a good protein source. Go figure! Good luck.

I am 3 1/2 months post op and I eat sunflower seeds all the time. My doctor told me that the oil is good for the hair and face. He also told me that it was a great source of protein.
