Question:
Is anyone taking Methotrexate orally?

I have recently been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis among other things. My doctor has prescribed oral methotrexate, which I am to begin taking tonight. I start with 6 pills one day a week. Is anyone else taking methotrexate orally, and if so, are you suffering from nausea or finding the pills aren't working due to malabsorption. I am two years out from Lap RNY. Thanks!    — jenpatalano (posted on September 29, 2005)

The methotreaxate tablets did not absorb with me so I had to start the shots equivalent to 7 pills every week. It is $5 a week for the injection and the nurse giving the shot and my 20% of medicare all in one. Which is just $20 a month. My RA keeps my immune system out of wack and very low resistance so I have to take antibiotics every month for atleast 10 days and when I do I have to miss the shot so I rarely pay the full $20. Methotraexate without med insurance is expensive also for me. Ask your Rheumatologist for the med to give the shot to yourself or get the nurse at the office to do it 1 time a week. The prescripition would have cost $31 from the Rheumatologist, but if you get it from another drug store it would ciost much more. Right now there is a shortage of methotrexate the shot form here for some reason and the Rheumatologists are the only ones who are able to sell it to their patients for a price of $31 a months supply only. I just go to the RA drs and let the nurse give mine to me which as I said before is cheaper.
