Question:
abdominal hernia pain

I have an abdominal hernia, my question is,, every few days I have such excruciating pain under my ribs and around my back,, it feels like a band wrapped around me,, really painful,, Its hard to breath during it, and also my face pours sweat during it,, the pain lasts anywhere from a minute to five minutes. The hernia is located on my right side of my incision (open RNY 11/14/02) down near my belly button. Thats why Im confused, since the hernia is down, and the pain is up under my ribs. I have an appointment with the surgeon for Feb. Any input would be greatly appreciated... Thank you in advance Amy    — Amy Hoffman (posted on December 25, 2003)

Amy, I have had 4 hernias, none of them created the type of pain you are explaining. Please call a Dr ASAP, do you still have a gall bladder? I know before Ihad mine taken out during WLS I would have the type of pain your drescribing. Good Luck!

Hi - Just went through the very same thing this Christmas. I was doubled over in pain and I was sure that I had a strangulated hernia. Turns out I was severely constipated and a bit obstructed. The hospital made me do a few enimas -yuck and I got some anti spasmatic drugs from my doctor. I'm also on soft foods and liquids. I feel better each day but it has taken a good 5 days to feel better. Go see your doctor. Although I have to admit it was a bit embarassing to find out I was full of s*&#! :)

I had the same situation, my hernia is NOT the cause of the pain. THey believe residual sludge from my gall bladder removal caused stones to form in the common bile duct. It is that or sphincter of Oddi syndrome. The other possiblity is an intestinal hernia which I just had repaired 6 days ago with my incisional hernia, I am waiting to see if my symptoms stop. It happened to me several times, it was pain like I had never felt. Move up your appointment and I would suggest a consult with a gastroenterologist
