Question:
Anyone with bipolar had WLS?

I was recently diagnosed with manic depression, (Bipolar).I'm taking trileptal for treatment. Just started meds today and wondering how this will effect my pouch. Anyone else on meds for this?    — Shelley P. (posted on July 23, 2002)

I had weight loss surgery in May, and I am also bipolar. I was afraid the surgery would hurt my mental status, but it has done the opposite. I was diagnosed 2 years ago with bipolar disorder and I felt that not being able to take time released meds would really hurt me. My doctor put me on liquids(some did not have liquids, but you can go to a compounding pharmacy and have them made) which meant I had to take them more frequently. I was upfront with my doctor, and he really helped me. Lots of meds can be cut (as long as they are not time-released), or you can take a smaller dose which sometimes means a smaller pill. My mental outlook is great. I have not felt this good in years. Hope this helps.

Hi. I too am Bi-Polar. Diagnosed March 2002 on 400mg Lithium twice a day. This drug causes me to stay hungry thus weight gain something terrible. My P-Doc says the WLS will help me because of the pouch being smaller and thus not able to eat more than what it will hold. He was in very much support of me having the WLS and actually wrote a referral for me. I won't have my surgery til 8-30-02 so I don't know how else I'll be effected, but my doctor seems to think that this may actually bring me some relief with my BP symptoms. Be well... *Leslie*

Watch out for appetite changes with the Trileptal. When I took it (pre-op), I gained 40 pounds in about 3 months. Increased appetite isn't typically a problem with that drug, but it was for me. I was ravenous all the time. Good luck with everything.

hiya i too am bipolar i take 250 mg depakote x 2/day and 20mg of prozac just after surgery was difficult because the liquid depakote made me sick (dump), we then tried time release capsules but i had to open them and sprinkle the "sprinkles" into applesauce, but not allowed to chew them and it was like 25 pills 2xday and i could not do that! so i waited the 6 weeks and got back on prozac but at like 3 weeks i knew i needed my depakote so my doc switched me to lowest dosage (250mgs is small pill) and it has worked just fine good luck!

I was diagnosed with bi-polar 5 years ago. I was on depakote and prozac and I am happy to report that I no longer need the medication. I tried to take the liquid form of the prozac after my surgery and it make me throw up, so with the okay from my docter I decided to try and go without the medicine. I had my surgery on april 18 and have been off meds since. I feel wonderful.
