Question:
Unable to keep water down - does anybody have this problem?

Hi! I am about 11 weeks post op. I just got home from a 6 day stay in the hospital. I was dehydrated, could not keep anything thing down and was throwing up mucus. They did tests and said that I have a reflux problem. I was fine the last day I was in the hospital now I am unable to keep down any liquids again. Has anybody had this problem? I am at my wits end. Thanks...Tracy    — tracyr (posted on April 6, 2002)

It sounds like you might have a stricture. It is a common complication after this surgery. Its an easy fix, you'll have to have an endoscopy with a balloon dilation. I've already had to have it done twice. It is a painless procedure, and will help tremendously.

Tracy - I had the same problem. I couldn't keep anything down at all, and it was for a long time! My surgeon wasn't much help. I ended up seeing a gastro doctor, who did an endoscopy. He found an undissolved vitamin lodged in the entrance to my intestines! Tissue had grown over it, restricting the movement of food! He removed it while he was there, and it was simple, painless, and the results were immediate. Please let me know if you need more info. Cris [email protected]

Sounds to me like you have a stricture. I've had two and the solution is so easy. Just contact your surgeon or your gastro dr. to schedule an endoscopy with possible dialation. Good Luck.

I'm surprised that they didn't scope you to see what was up. The symptoms that you describe sound like a stricture. I had 2 dilated and felt much better. Of course it could be what the other poster mentioned, but you really need to talk with your surgeon about this. Whatever the cause, it needs to be fixed. I hope you find relief soon!

i also had this problem until about 3 months out (4 months next week and down 94lbs) you might want to try to find an ice shaver and freeze some crystal light or whatever you drink. i found it much easier to 'suck' down my liquid in frozen form then to sip. i also drink much better WITH a straw then without. my dr also recommended any liquid without caffeine is good as long as you are getting in your fluids. good luck and keep sipping.
