Question:
I have been having a very mucous like feeling in the back of my throat.

This is at the very bottom of my throat, by my collar bone. It feels almost foamy.. I have taken all kinds of heartburn meds like Tumms, pepcid, pepto, and my moms heartburn medication and nothing is working. I also tried some meds for runny noses just in case it was that. Nothing has worked. I had the VBG done 6 weeks ago. Does anyone else have this problem? And if so what do you do about it? Thanks!    — Katrina D. (posted on May 23, 2001)

Hi I am 3 1/2 mo. post-op. I still have the mucous in the base of my throat and whenever I vomit (something is stuck or at that one bite too much) I usually vomit mucous and saliva, very little food. It's annoying and I do not know what it is, but do know it has not let up. Hope you find a solution.

I'm almost a year post op, but when I was about 3-4 weeks out from my open RNY, I started having the same foamy stuff creeping up in my throat and mouth. I was so nauseous that I could hardly eat anything, and constantly had to carry a tissue to spit in. Sounds so gross, but that's what I did for about 2-3 weeks. Nobody knew what it was. Not even my Primary Care Doc nor my Surgeon. It finally went away on it's own, but I still don't know what it was. I'm down 126# so it was worth the trouble. Could it possible be allergy related? Maybe post nasal drip that backs up from the pouch?

I have experienced this only once and it was one time too many!!! I had eaten too fast and didn't chew well. It felt like something was stuck. I had these uncontrollable and painful hiccups and then I kept feeling like I had to vomit. I would try to vomit, but the only thing that came up was froth. I could not swallow it, I just kept spitting it out again and again. There was very little food that came up. I really wanted to get rid of whatever was causing my discomfort, but no luck. It took several hours for me to feel better. This was about 2 months ago. I have never felt sick again. When I had my 3 month check up with my surgeon we talked about it. He is not sure what exactly causes it, but the name for this condition is "frothy spits". Sounds great, huh???

It is mucous! My surgeon told me that the upper portion of your stomach does produce it. I still have episodes of it now when I eat to much, fast or something does not agree with me. It does diminish and you will not be bothered with the farther out you get.
