Question:
Has anyone has the RNY surgery that has cardiomyopathy or CHF?

I am a 53 year old female with congestive heart failure, idiopathic cardiomyopathy, and sleep apnea. I would like to know if anyone has had the RNY surgery and how it went with these conditions. Also, how did you take your BP meds, etc.    — Loretta D. (posted on June 30, 2002)

I went into CHF in July of 1999 after giving birth to my daughter. I had surgery on 1/8/02 and the doc made me do a lot of tests to check my heart (to make sure I had adequate left ventriclular function). Fortunately I did (he would NOT have done the surgery otherwise. I am now 6 months post-op down 126lbs. and off my blood pressure meds completely. I believe that if you are too sick for surgery your doc will know it.

I have cardiomyopathy because as a child I had an overactive throyid. My throyid made my heart go to fast and I would go into HF. I'm 45 year old. Before I had this surgery I had to have an echo stress test and a complete exam by my cardio doc. Also, right before surgery the anesthesiologist doc put two IV in my arms one went right into an artery to monitor my heart during surgery. He also insisted I go into the ICU to be on the safe side for one night and my surgeon went along with him. Since my surgery on 4/22 I am down 60 pounds and don't have to take my BP medicines unless my BP is above 100/60 (which it seldon is). I don't have to take my heart pill or water pill at all anymore. Plus, I hardly ever have to use my inhaller any more. If you have more questions don't hesitate to e-mail me. Good Luck!

Hi. I am 41 and have idiopathic cardiomyopathy, lupus, and a pacemaker for complete heart block. I have surgery 7/5/02.They monitored my heart closely during surgery. At some point they had to give me a nitro injection, and while in recovery, they gave me sublingual nitro as I woke up complaining of chest pain. Since then, everything has been great. I haven't taken my Norvasc at all since surgery, and by blood pressure is the best it's been in a long time. I've begun exercising, and haven't had to take Nitro at all. I don't see any reason why your condition should keep you from having th surgery. I'm sure your doctor will check out everything thoroughly before, during and after surgery. Good Luck!
