Need a TT and hernia repair...anyone dealt w/self insured comapny? We use Cigna HMO but we are a self insured company. I am hoping that someone can give my some info on that journey. Paper work has been sent in to to insurance company. PCP wrote letter as well since he has treated fungal infections. When I went to visit the plastic surgeon he also spotted another infection that was healing. Please help me. I need to know what to do if I get denied.    — Janet V. (posted on June 18, 2002)

My company is self insured. Trigon Blue Cross/Blue Shield pays the claims. My doctor called in for an approval on a TT and was denied. He sent in a letter with pictures and then I also sent in a letter and I found out last night that I was approved for the TT!!! You need to check your certificate booklet to see what it specifically covers and doesn't. I think my letter to the insurance company giving details on my limitations to exercise and the problems I was having with the excess skin also helped my cause. Trust me, write your own letter to the insurance company and give all the problems you are having. Sometimes the doctor's letters aren't that great.
