Question:
Can you go to the movies a week after surgery?

This is probably a stupid & trivial issue. If I had to choose one or the other, I'd take the sugery. That's more important to me. My surgery date is exactly one month away - on May 21, 2001. Now I'm just wondering - There will be some new movies in the theaters that my husband & I really want to see, staring this Memorial Day. Being that Mem. Day is about a week after my surgery, is one week after surgery too soon to go out to the movies? If yes, then when is the earliest that I would be able to go? If no, what if any problems might I expect? We usually don't get the popcorn or anything. I usually just bring some water with me. And we would just go see the movie then go home.    — lalasmommy (posted on April 21, 2001)

Because of the colors you have selected for your profile I couldn't read what kind of surgery you are having. As someone who had open surgery I don't think I was feeling well enough at one week post op to have sat through a movie. Maybe you'll be differnt. If you're feeling up to it try it - you can always leave if you're not feeling well. Don't be surprised if the smell of the popcorn bothers you even if you don't usually eat it. We went to a baseball game at 17 days post-op and I was surrounded by people eating and that really bothered me!

I could've gone, but not STAYED. Would've been too drowsy to stay sitting still that long. So, you may have to go 3 times to see the WHOLE movie!

I am 9 days post op (open RNY) and have been to the movies twice now. I bought a bottle of water for a high price...lol and was totally satisfied. However in 9 days all I have been able to eat is sugar-free popsicles and water. My dr keeps you on liquids for 3 wks and I can't even eat soup, it makes me deathly ill. I've also been to Wal-Mart, Target (2 different days) and the bank, post office and running errands. I started driving today. Good luck. Laura :)

I'm 12 days post-op and went to the movies at 5 days post-op...felt fine and had absolutely no problems at all. Got myself a big bottle of water..and even laughed alot..(although it hurt to do that)*L* It really depends on how your feeling...just let your body be the judge. My doctor told me not to just sit around..get out and do things as my body would allow. I took his advice. Sure beats sitting home. Best wishes to you on your upcoming surgery...*S*

Hi there! Yes you can go to the movies a week post op. I had open rny and I went 1 week later. Now I go once a week and love being able to fit in the seats so nice. I had wls on 11/13/00 and have lost 125 lbs so far with 75 more to go. Good luck to you. And I also eat small amounts of pop corn now-yummy! P.S. sneak in your own water, they charge 4.00 for one.

Ten days post op I went and saw the movie Chocolat! Not the best choice in movies but yes, I could sit through it fine. I had my water bottle in my purse and jar of baby food fruit. At ten days, post op I was not able to go more than 2 hours without having something on my stomach. Not hunger but pain. Go and enjoy!

I went to the movies 6 days post op and was fine. The problem I had was that I still did not fit in the seat and so the act of pouring myself into the seat was a bit painful because of the surgery (and I had Lap) but just like pre op I sat through the discomfort and enjoyed the movie and was fine. As has been written, bring your own water. Though I brought a can of Caffeine Free Sugar Free Pepsi and bought some popcarn, too. I did just fine with that, too, just sipped and ate slower!!! (But of course, I had the DS so food is not quite an issue) Some people have found that bringing a small pillow with them to press gently on their abdomen can help while sitting in the theater and also just to soften and cushion the car ride to and from the theater or mall or wherever you galavant to afterwards. Life is anew....

Hi. I am exactly 1 wk post-op open RNY. I have not gone to the theater but I'm sure I could. In fact I'm thinking about starting to go once a week while I am off work and the kids are not at home. Hardly know what to do with myself since I can't do housework, laundry, etc. Maybe eat before you go and take a bottle of water as others have suggested.

I had open RNY and went to the movies 4 days post op. The more you walk, the faster you feel better. I even walked from the parking lot to the theatre and back. I did sit in the back row so I could stand and stretch because I was having a lot of gas (burping). I was glad I went. Just don't go to anything too funny because laughing hurt!!

No, it is NOT trivial- you bring up a very good issue. I was VERY depressed during my hospital stay, and one week post op. I feel that had someone stepped in and MADE me interact socially, or physically (rather than sitting at home watching TV) I would have recovered a lot faster. My brain went stale, and I was in a terrible funk. Keep your TV on while at the hospital, and try to go out once home. You need sun, fresh air, interaction, communication (Other than phone and internet!)...believe me, if I had to do all over again, I would prepare each one of my friends (or family) for one day of being responsible for me, take me out, feed me, talk to me etc. help me shower, help me dress, help me with my foods, water etc. I am sure they wouldn't have minded, and I would have probably felt so much better, faster. For the movies, you will just need water.

As long as you are comfortable sitting in that position for a couple of hours, or however long the movie is, go ahead!! Enjoy that movie and take a protien drink with you along with your water! :~)
