Question:
Has anybody heard whether or not a gel capsule can swell and cause bowel obstruction?

My dietician told me I could take any pills smaller than the tip of my pinky finger postop. I was taking the gel stool softener caplets and have started to have alot of trouble getting anything down. I can only take a couple bites or swallows of anything but water without burping it back up. I did an experiment with these pills in water and they swelled up to about 5x their size and just sat in the water! I'm very afraid.    — Lynne H. (posted on March 4, 2001)

Gel capsules also melt in heat, like the 100 degrees it is inside your stomach. Think of jello on a warm stove.
