Question:
Will I be able to take my

Since my surgery (3/2/04) I have been taking some of my pre surgery meds in liquid form (lasix and potassium) I hate the taste of the potassium and it makes me sick to my stomach. I am wondering if I will be able to absorb the pills. I also take other meds for depression and thus far open the capsules and put them in my food, will I ever be able to just "take them" with a glass of water instead?    — Kathy C. Kathy, I was on potassium before having surgery. All because of the diuretic I took to reduce the swelling in my legs. I stopped taking the potassium the day before the surgery. Becuase I was taking a powerful diuretic, my K+ levels dropped post-surgery, but I was discharged home and told I did not have to take the potassium. 5 days after surgery my K+ level was nomral and it has been normal ever since. I guess I am telling you all this to let you know that you may not have to be on K+ post-op. It all depends on the reason you take it and your Dr. - Janine

You should be able to go back to regualr pills in a little while. Some dr's don't want you to take the pills at first. Some don't care. Go figure. But, since yours does, please ask him when you can go back to regualr pills. I've seen 3 months, 4 months, and lots of other time frames. Good luck to you!

At my 8 week post-op checkup, my surgeon let me go back to all of my regular medicines - no more liquids, no more crushing, no more chewables. I was scared, but I had no problem swallowing any of them.

I can sympathize! My surgery was 2/11/2004 and I've been either taking liquid meds or crushing the ones that aren't liquid (hypertension). And some of them taste pretty awful!!!! I keep telling myself that I won't have to do this forever, some day I'll be able to NOT take meds for HBP at all! The arthritis won't go away, but some day I'll be able to take that stuff in pills. I can relate, believe me!
