Question:
What affect does alcohol have on post-ops?

I know that we could probably feel the affects of alcohol quicker because of WLS. I am really not a drinker but when I did drink it was daquaris or other sweeter tasting drinks. I'm not so worried about the alcohol in these drinks as I am to the sugar used in the mixes. I would hate to have a drink than get double slammed but the alcohol and dumping from the sugar. How have other tolerated mixed drinks post-op?    — Sarahlicious (posted on October 31, 2003)

Hi, Sarah! I also liked the sweeter drink mixes when I drank pre-op, which was maybe once or twice a year. I also dump badly on sugar now, so I probably won't drink for a lont, long time, if ever. If and when I do drink, I will try it out at home first, that way if I dump, I'll be at home! Good Luck!

I tried a bloody mary about two weeks ago (I asked the bartender to go light on the vodka), and didn't see much of an effect from it. I would think that, as far as sweet drinks go, you might want to stay away from them; you probably know your own limits in regard to sugar, but for me, anything over 10 grams is a guaranteed dump. Good luck!

Hi, I had LAP RNY on 8/7/02, (-162!) and I actually drink quite frequently (no, i am not an alcoholic, and yes, i know it's kinda of bad for me lol). Anyway, I usually drink Amaretto Sours or Captain Morgan with Diet Coke. If it is made the usual way I usually am drunk off of two. Sometimes though they make them very strong and I am buzzed off of literally 3-4 SIPS..lol my friends think it's very funny, and we joke that I am a cheap date. As far as other things that happen, I find that sometimes I do get bad gas after having drinks that contain Captain Morgan. Oh and heartburn can be an issue if you are susceptible to that. I will say that I have never dumped off an alcoholic drink, but I think if you drank something really sweet like a mudslide or something, then you might feel kinda icky.

I might have a drink every couple of years. That's about it. I only like a Grasshopper. One drink PRE OP would make me warm and alittle light headed or whozzy. POST OP.... it does nothing. No effect at all now. I've heard of a few others that say this, but we are definately in the minority!
