Question:
Anyone else have the worst constipation EVER?

Okay, I know this is personal, but the constipation I am feeling is so painful that I cried! It took all day to finally have a movement and then I was so sore I could barely sit. OH MY GOD!!!    — Michele B. (posted on October 4, 2003)

Sometimes if I eat alot of protein and don't get enough fiber that happens to me. Have you spoke with your Doctor? How far are you post-op? sometimes pain meds can do that to you also....Good Luck!

Yes. I found that my problem was the calcium I was taking. I stopped for awhile then started with coral calcium and things are just fine. Talk to your doctor about this. I also used colase and pericolase for awhile. Good Luck!!!!!

Yes, I never remember having consipation problems preop, but I have it now. It's not as bad as yours, but it's still a bit of a problem. It was worse earlier post op when I wasn't getting as much fluids in. Maybe not enough fluid is part of your problem? Hope you can find a solution quickly. S

Mine was so bad that I refused to take the iron supplements until my first bloodwork at 3 months. Thank goodness it was ok and I just need to take my Flintstones Completes 2x a day to keep it that way!! I thought I heard that some can be given iron by injection which does not affect your bowels.I am assuming that the iron may be the caus of your difficulty. Good luck!!

I am two months post-op and to not have constipation, I take one teaspoon of Phillips Milk of Magnasia daily and about 3 times a week I eat the shelled sunflower seeds, well, I break them and eat the seed inside about two tablespoons of seeds, works like a charm, everyday I have a nice smooth movement.

This sounds like me four weeks ago. I was so constipated and almost impacted. It took three hours to have a bowel movement; during which I almost passed out from the pain. My husband was ready to take me to the hospital it was so bad. After I was so sore I had to call in sick from work the next day because I could not sit. <p> After calling my surgeon and pcp they realized I was over doing the calcium. They had me on 1000 mg of calcium and the calcium in my multi vitiman plus I was drinking at least to cups of skim milk a day. They told me to stop the 1000 mg of calcium and take one stool softner (colace) a day. I have been regular ever since with no constipation and no pain. Thank God because I don't ever want to have that kind of pain again.

Are you using ferrous sulfate form iron? Or carbonate form calcium? Those are constipators. Also, you NEED fats/oils, since you malabsorb them, to a degree. And plenty of water. Doing all that? Some green leafies, nuts, seeds, grains? I do all that stuff, and still have problems, as did my mom. But at least try the easy stuff first. Many put ground flax seed (not the oil) in their protein shake or on cereal and swear by it, utterly.

Benefiber in a drink works wonderful. Also either sunflower seeds, soy nuts or popcorn. Good luck. Kathy, June 23,2003......295/229/170

Benefiber in a protein drink every day helps as does flaxseed oil as well (I use fruit flavored protein drinks and add frozen fruit so between the Benefiber, flaxseed oil and fruit, it usually does the trick). If that fails, I move up to 2 spoons of MoM and that usually does it. If THAT fails, its time for mineral oil and an overnight laxative. Mineral oil has no taste and usually works very well but for me, it's a last resort.

When I was 3 to 4 months postop I was getting severely constipation I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital. I could just imagined the horror of going to the ER and explaining your just full of ----. I started drinking citruses of magnesium, then used a fleet enema. The iron in my vitamins causes my problems so I have to watch it. I eat more fruits and vegetables and fiber. This has happened about five times since then and I have in the house at all times enemas, citrate of magnesium and suppostories so if I have further problems I will not wait that long and be in so much pain.
