Question:
Giving Blood?

Our company is sponsoring a blood drive, are we able to give blood? I am just about 5 months out and just very curious about this one!    — Patricia F. (posted on March 19, 2003)

I was told at the last blood drive at work that you had to wait a year after surgery to donate again. If you have any questions you could call the Red Cross directly or visit their Web site for more info.

Yeah one year appears the rule. That time will fly by. Its amazing how fast it goes.

I have a very lenient surgeon. I am already eating at 8 days post-op and he said to NEVER give blood or blood products again.

I've donted blood 3 times in the 20 months since I had surgery and have never had a problem..my surgeon said it wouldnt be a problem...each doctor is different I guess..but i'd always check with my doctor first before I did anything..good luck to ya'll!

Personally I would never give blood again! I need my own to badly right now! (Slightly anemic since WLS). IMHO, I think no one who had WLS should. But I base that on how I feel since WLS and the many nutricional and other problems I've had since surgery.

Don't do it. Even post-ops who aren't anemic can have their iron count plummet after giving blood. It's not worth the risk. My surgeon told me I should never donate again.

I just tried to donate last week (I'm 15 months post-op) and was turned down for low iron (currently having that checked out). As long as your blood work is fine, and you're fully recovered from surgery and eating normally, there's really no reason you can't donate. Just keep in mind - after donating, they usually provide a sugary snack. Be careful if you dump (I don't).

I was told to never donate blood except as would be needed by myself for a surgery - and then only if my iron levels were excellent AND I was monitored closely afterwards and got my fluids in. I'd really ask your surgeon on this one.

hi, I have always donated blood in the past and now with this war thing, The Red Cross is in need of blood, so I called my surgeon (I almost 6 months out) and I was told I can't ever donate again. Its just too risky for us.
