Question:
How can I folow the rules better?

OK, Time to kick me while I am down.

I need some information. I am 4 months out from surgery 5'10" starting weight 298. I am now down to 210 pounds. :) The problem that I have is that my husband is currently deployed (for a year), and I have a 5 yr old daughter. I am a commuter student to UNC (3 hr. dr every day), and I do not have time for anything much less exercise (besides the running between classes).

I also do not eat breakfast or lunch (same habits as before surgery), although I do get in my liquid intake, if I try and eat breakfast I get sick the entire day, (not eating to fast, or big bites I ust emotionally HATE breakfast). I don't get home till 2:00 and by that time my daughter is comming home, we try and eat dinner by 5:00 which usually consists of us going out to eat since cooking for one person is so hard. I detest T.V. dinners. I do admit that my dinners are usually very healthy my daughter and I will normally split a meal. We enjoy, steak, salmon, and chicken as well as many other things. I do get my protein there and it is healthy food that I eat.

Between school for me and my daughters school, both our homework, her extra curricular activities, and Church I just am unable to see how to break this cycle. How do I budget my time better so that I can eat at least lunch? I have tried packing my lunch it doesn't work I am not hungry and when I try to eat I usually get nauseated. I have tried taking snacks but I just can't eat them. I try and eat all protein although at least once a week I will eat a salad.

I am just wondering how long my body will be able to tolerate this lack of food intake, sleep, as well as emotional support. I do not have a solid aftercare program seeing as I am military. I am also having to have my gallbladder removed on the 17th of Dec. My husband is still going to be gone, and my family does not reside in the area. Maybe I am depressed, I just don't know.

Can anyone help give me some suggestions? Thanks so much! Have a blessed day! huggers ~Ang~ — angel_wls (posted on November 20, 2002)

Ang, First congratulations on the weight loss. I also have a lot of trouble because I never ate breakfast or lunch preop either. But like you already, said your body needs the food. I keep a bag of individual string cheese sticks, protein bar, nuts with me and eat what I can tolerate on the drive. A lot of times I can only handle a little bit, but at least it is something. I also keep lots of bottled water in the car to drink. I am on the road from 7-7 right now and like you I don't get a chance for a "meal" until the evening. Find anything portable that you can stand and leave them in your car, a snack size is better than nothing. I don't know if you are depressed, but it would be normal with all you are going through. My surgeon places all her patients on Celexa because she says it is to be expected. Please follow up with doc if you don't feel better soon. I go to a local support meeting that I saw on this site, since my surgeon was far away. Best wishes Carrie

Hi Angel! Don't beat yourself up! 1st- the nausea. Can you take anything for it? I had a bit of nausea/vomiting, tried pepcid, tums, and finally ended up on Prilosec. If you get the nausea under control, you can probably find you can tolerate a bit of something in the morning - which will help keep your energy up, and your body functioning. 2nd - not finding time to eat - I've discovered a protein bar I really like, it's got 15 grams of protein - 250 calories, and they're very tasty. It's called Nutribar, I get them at my local grocery store. I tried a few others, I also like the Zone bars too. These are a great way to nibble on something small, yet get some energy and other benefits. I'm a guidance counselor (soon to be assistant principal!!) who has *no time* to snack during the day, so I really rely on easy things like this. I also keep peanuts in my office, and pretzel sticks too - for when I want something crunchy. I too eat very well at night, but I also do breakfast before work, which seems to help a lot. Hang in there! You've got a lot going on, just try to take care of yourself, ok? Let us know how you're doing! =) Sarah

I have protein drink every day for breakfast. I used to like Mocha Ice Blendeds so now I make mine at home in the blender, put it in a travel mug and drink it on the way to work. Great source of protein, low carb, no sugar. It's 2 scoops Designer Whey Chocolate, 4 oz of coffee, 4-5 ice cubes, a dash of NF milk. You can sip it slowly on your drive so it won't feel like a meal but will give you good protein. Congrats on your excellent weight loss.

Angel, I have the same kind of problems with eating. I have discovered Cocktail Peanuts, Cube cheese and Low Fat Wheat Thins! I can carry them in the car with me, I can snack on them for breakfast, lunch or even dinner ( though I try not to have them for dinner). Peanuts and Cube cheese are high in protien and even though they have fat, it is good fat. I have been snacking / eating these three things for breakfast and or lunch just about every day for over a month, am 15 weeks post op, have lost 66 lbs and when I get in 4 bottles of water a day, I lose an average of 5 lbs a week. I told my dietician what I was eating and she was happy with it. Good luck! Tami
