Question:
WHATS A GOOD REMEDY FOR A SEVERE SORE THROAT?

THIS IS OFF TOPIC, BUT I AM IN AGONY. I HAVE STREP THROAT, I HAVE TRIED WATER AND SALT GARGLING? DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY OLD FASHIONED HOME REMEDIES THAT WORK?    — Gale G. (posted on May 3, 2002)

From the Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine: Conventional medicine is very successful in treating strep throat. However, several alternative therapies may help to resolve the disease or relieve symptoms. Herbal remedies such as echinacea ( Echinacea spp.), goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis ), and garlic (Allium sativum ) are believed to strengthen the immune system and combat bacterial infections.

I dont know if you are pre or Post op. But what we do here at home is drink Hot Tea with Lemon and water. Just slice the lemon and about a tBS of Honey. Taste good and it soothes the throat.

Anytime I have gotten a throat infection over the last say 5 or 6 years, my doctor has perscribed something called HOLDENS SOLUTION. It is a mixture of Benedryl, Nistatin, Prediapred and Tetricyclene. It has worked wonders for my SORE throat.

I've never tried this. But Prevention Magazine (?) said to eat RAW FRESH pineapple (no canned). It has to be fresh. That it has some enzines (or something) in it that helps a sore throat. Next time I get one I'd like to try it and see if it really does work.

This is not a home remedy, but you will be amazed at the relief. Like other posters said, don't mess around with Strep Throat. Go to the doctor and get it treated immediately. BUT, while you're there, ask them to prescribe "Tetracaine Lollipops" to treat the soreness while you're waiting for the strep to clear up. I had a SEVERE SORE THROAT post op which led to me becoming dehydrated and nearly rehospitalized because I could NOT swallow without feeling as though I was swallowing chards of glass. What I had was ulcers all over the back of my throat and down my throat where you can't see and where gargling can't reach. However, no matter what the cause of your sore throat, you have to treat the "sore" part of the problem. Believe me, after 8 days of suffering and gargling salt water and praying for relief, a wonderful Ear Nose & Throat PHYSICIANS ASSISTANT prescribed these lollipops for me and within ONE DAY my throat was half as sore and within TWO DAYS there was NO SORENESS, although I could steel feel the swelling in my throat and the ulcers lasted a few more days. But the pain was gone!!! And these lollipops taste just exactly like reglular suckers. I got grape and cherry and they don't taste the least like medicine. You suck them for 30 seconds at a time and swallow the juice and this "deadens" the affected areas of your throat so that you can swallow and eat and drink without suffering. You do this every one to two hours, as needed. One lollipop lasted me 4 days. Try this and you will be amazed. Good luck!
