Question:
Ok . . . I have to know . . . what is this wooden spoon thing all about!

I understand the purpose of the wooden spoon but my question is how do you keep your spoon clean and what do you store it in? I'm almost ashamed to ask...:-}    — Carol S. (posted on October 27, 2003)

One of those times when I knew how to post anonymously. LOL! I use tongs. I keep them in a plastic bag at the bottom of a canvas bag. Also in that canvas bag is a container of antiseptic wipes. I wipe the tongs off after I use 'em. I flush the wipes. Unless there is another use for the spoon, in which case, I've just embarassed myself horribly! LOL!

First, I roughed up the wood so when I wrapped it with toilet paper it would stay put. Then, when it was time to use the spoon I wrapped it with tons of toilet paper. I would carefully slide it off and flush it. Then wash the spoon with soap. I stored it in a plastic bag in a drawer next to the toilet when I got home and at the hospital they gave me a wash basin to use. Once I no longer need the spoon, about 10 days after surgery I threw it away. It was the best tool I could have bought. It sure beat asking someone to wipe me when I could not bend after surgery.

Well, since the previous posters have done such a wonderful job of explaining, I'm going to "stray" for a moment here & give you this link http://www.amplestuff.com/ as an alternative for the "wooden spoon thing". Best Wishes! Amanda :)

I never got my spoon dirty. I would use the wet wipes with it and wrapped it real good. I wash it after EVERY use. I also stored it in a container OR plastic bag. I only had to use it for 7 days then I was fine. I tell ya it was a life saver for me :)

LOL Laura! Congratulations for asking! The spoon or the tongs are to wipe one's backside with after a bowel movement. Rebecca, yeah, huh? (grin) Some/most people find it difficult to wipe right after surgery. In my case, as a super morbidly obese person, I used the tongs daily prior to surgery, simply because I had become so fat, I couldn't wipe my arse if you paid me to do so. /np I now have a very important message to make. As of yesterday, I no longer have to use tongs to wipe. It may not be a milestone in your life, but it brought tears to my eyes. My first goal was to get below 400 lbs. Done. My second goal was to get off the tongs. Done. My next goal is to be weighed on a normal doctor's scale which goes up to 350. The way I'm going, I'll (God willing) achieve that goal in December. Wahooooo!
