Question:
Can someone tell me what to do when everything basically makes me sick?

I am 5 weeks post-op and everything was going well until week three. I barf at the smell of my protein shakes and other smells like cologne, etc. Still like to smell good food cooking, though, lol. But my flinstone vitamins won't stay down and no matter how slow I eat my food (mushy foods with a little weight to it) it seems like the food gets stuck. It is like pregnancy all over again. Also, I was wondering shouldn't I be able to drink more water than 1 oz(about the size of a medicine cup)?    — venessa . (posted on June 2, 2003)

Hi, I am now 4 mths. post-op and had the same problem at 3 weeks post-op until just recently, it is called the nausea stage, but I even threw up alot too. So, if you don't have any nausea medicine to prevent this, then you might want to talk to your doctor to see if he will prescribe you some, the medicine helps, but this is a normal stage to go thru until about your 8th. week or so. Hopefully you'll get over it sooner! As for the food getting stuck,I had the same prob. and my doctor had to do an endescope to make sure that I didn't have a stricture so you might want to talk to him about that, I just had some acid build up in my throat that was making my food not go down so he had to put me on a stronger medicine to help with that and it does. And, finally as for the water thing, I could only take little sips at a time to get my water in, so that is normal and now I am able to drink alittle more like a medicine cup at a time at 4 mths. post. So, give that alittle more time-k! Hope this info. helps, talk to your doc! Good Luck!!!

i was just like that and they gave me reglan which just made me sicker and I was nauseated from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed with no break, then I called the md and they put me on zofran which after a couple of days stopped and I am feeling much better, call your MD and hope you feel better soon, it does get better.

I was very nauseated for several wks post op too. I used suppository meds (can't recall the name), tried Nexium, Tums and ate a lot of saltines. I also think I may've been dehydrated. I know I was not drinking nearly as many fluids as I did pre-op. I've read about a lot of ppl going thru this so know that it usually passes and just hang in there. (I truly felt like I was pregnant.)

Well, I'm gonna state what I think is the obvious here, but what I would tell you to do is call your doctor. Granted, this, for some, is "par for the course," however, the best person you could pose this question to is your doctor. Best of luck!

Nausea or not, if you're only able to get down 1 ounce of fluid at a time at 5 weeks you should definitely tell your surgeon! You could have a stricture or something else that only they can help you with. There is no reason to suffer needlessly like this. If nothing else they can prescribe meds to help with the nausea.

As with previous posters, I agree that your doctor should be called. For me, I noticed that even though I didn't feel like it, I had to eat. The longer I waited in between meals (sometimes 8 or more hours), the worse I felt when I finally did get something in. It also had a HUGE impact on how much water I could take in. Now that I've forced myself to eat regardless of whether I'm hungry or not, I am doing MUCH better. Good luck!

Get checked out by your surgeon. I was just like you.I threw up everything. One day I started throwing up old blood, turned out to be drainage blood from after surgery. It was blocking my stoma. Now that it's gone,I can eat.
