I'm 7.5 yrs, my husband is 6.5 yrs out. WE have freinds who are further out. Some are very well, some are, um, not so well. Can you be specific with questions?

Michelle, by not doing so well, do you mean they have regained weight or that they are having medical problems resulting from malabsorbtion? Just curious.

Crystal: yes. Both. All of the above. And many are doing beautifully. The difference is in their follow-up and their willingness to participate in it. People have problems early on and often overcome them, so I'm not referring to them, but figured the asker was asking about chronic problems, right?

My mother had VBG 15 years ago...she lost about 90lbs and has regained about 30 lbs...half she says because of the way she eats and half because of menopause. She is in great health and still considers her decision to have surgery the best decision she ever made!

Actually, last week, I found out a woman I used to work had an older version of the surgery about 20 years ago, and you would never know!!!! She is healthy, very healthy... and has more energy than most people her age (50ish)... She said she will never regret having the surgery :-)

My friend had her surgery 13 years ago and she still throws up several times everyday but she wants to keep gorging on food, She is basically bulimic but is scared of regaining the wait plus she eats huge quantities of chips, nuts, snacks and then goes to the bathroom and throws it all up.

The gastric bypass coordinator in my surgeon's office had her surgery (open RNY) 17 years ago. She also runs our support group. She is doing great, still at her goal weight. When her surgery was done, our surgeon didn't transect, so she had to be transected because of staple line disruption a few years ago, but she had only regained about 10 lbs. I know she'd have this surgery again in a heartbeat.
