Question:
Can I take Midol after the surgery?

Midol is the only think that works for me and cramps. I have always had extreme cramps and they are only aggravated by PCOS. Please give me any advise you can. I use to take birthcontrol pills but that messed up me liver enzymes.    — Summer L. (posted on June 4, 2003)

I struggled with what my life would be like without Motrin products after WLS. I had HORRIBLE cramps my whole life. My Dr. told me they would get better with weight loss(which I didnt believe) they did and now I only rely on Tylenol!!!! I was cleared to take Vioxx if they became unbearable but 8 months later I havent had to use it once. Ask your surgeon about what prescription meds are right for you and stay away from the NSAIDS they are bad news for us WLS patients. Wendi Open RNY 9/19/02 down 130lbs

I would ask your doctor. Many surgeons say no to NSAIDS (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) like Ibupropen (motrin, advil, etc) Alleve, Asprin, and yes even Midol. *****HOWEVER, not all doctors agree this is a problem. My surgeon had me take liquid motrin in the hospital for pain. And since my surgery I've taken Midol and motrin with his ok. Always, ALWAYS with something to eat - or my *trick* is milk - which covers the something to eat and liquid. So, while most here will tell you no...my advice is to ask YOUR doctor.

Just wanted to add in.... Two prescription medications I see mentioned alot on this site are VIOXX and CELEBREX. Both are for arthritis and other pain. And BOTH are are prescription forms of NSAIDS. See data Vioxx (Rofecoxib) - http://www.nursespdr.com/members/database/ndrhtml/rofecoxib.html and Celebrex (Celecoxib) http://www.nursespdr.com/members/database/ndrhtml/celecoxib.html *****As before, my recommendation is to ask your own doctor. :)

I have taken Vioxx 25 mg for about 3 days every month since surgery without any problems, and my surgeon said it was okay. Tylenol in any strength is a was of money for me - never has helped with a headache or anything. Ask your own surgeon what you can take. As you will usually read here - there are no absolutes!
