Can I eat syrup?

Is anyone able to have syrup with their waffles or pancakes?    — Carolyn K. (posted on September 15, 2002)

Are you talking Sugar Free Syrup?? If not, I would not advise using it, and on the same subject, Pancakes and Waffles are full of Carbs, I would not advise eating either

There are sugar-free syrups that you can have with waffles or pancakes, but I'd question why you are eating the waffles or pancakes to begin with (and more than one if you do). Just one medium pancake (5" diameter) is 91 calories, with 17g of carbs and 2g of protein. One 4" diameter round waffle is 103 calories with 16g carbs and 2.5g of protein. <p> There are much healthier choices to be made than waffles or pancakes. I used to like my pancakes as much as the next person - I'd sometimes eat 6-8 of them. That's how I got in the shape I was pre-op. You need to change your eating choices and eating lifestyle to make this WLS a true success. JR (open RNY 7/17 -74 lbs)

I have the same question - why would you eat waffles or pancakes? I am 9 1/2 months post-op and have had exactly one piece of toast since my surgery - and that was because I was in the hospital and my surgeon ORDERED me to eat it. I just don't eat breads. I do eat a few crackers but I prefer to get my calories in foods that will give me some nutrition. I have always said that I have the rest of my life when I am maintaining my weight to have toast with a little no sugar added fruit spread or a piece of sugar-free candy. I would look at pancakes the same way. If you have to have something like that, I would suggest a piece of french toast - at least the egg has protein in it.

Carolyn-Log Cabin makes an excellent sugar-free syrup, made with splenda. A serving is 1/4 cup-35 calories. I use maybe 1 tbsp. It's less than 3.00 a bottle, and is very good. Bottle lasts forever-My family enjoys pancakes as a treat every once in a while and it makes me feel "normal" to be able to sit down with them for this treat. I can usually eat one small pancake, 1/2 of one if I have the occasional sausage patty with it. I do not feel guilty over this once or twice monthly. I just wouldn't eat them very often. Enjoy and load up on protein your next meal. RNY 6/01-293lbs, 9/02-145lbs.

carbs are not the enemy or so they may have you think I occasionally have a pancake or waffle there are many ways to make pancakes healthy. Even you die hard atkins people correct me if Im wrong atkins sells high protein pancake mix!

Pillsbury frozen pancakes have 260 calories for 3 of the cakes. In that 630 mg of sodium and 51 carbs. WOW Mrs. Butterworth's frozen waffles per 2 waffles 470 mg of sodium and 31 carbs--why would you want to eat that???

"Cozy Cottage" makes a SF/FF maple syrup that is ten calories per serving. However, I'd be more worried about the sugar & carb content in the pancakes themselves than the syrup (not to mention butter, if it's involved). I tried a protein pancake mix from smartcarbs, and I'm sorry to say it was gross! I think pancakes/waffles are just one of those foods you want to avoid. If it's a real craving, maybe you can just snatch one forkfull off somebody else's plate (preferrably not a stranger's :P), once in a blue moon. Nutritionally, pancakes are really more of a "dessert-type" food than a meal. :)

I personally don't eat waffles or pancakes. I would rather have something with more protein. BUT my mother is a diabetic and she says that the Smuckers SF syrup is very tasty.

My,my Carolyn, the anti-carb folks have got your #! As long as you ensure that you are getting your protein in every day, no reason why you can't enjoy a carb treat like pancakes or waffles. I'm sure you know that you'll be full on like 1/2 of one! I have tried the Cozy Cottage sugar free syrup and its pretty good. I can recall my nutritionist telling us to stay away from regular syrups..

As another poster said, Log Cabin Sugar Free Syrup sweetened with Splenda is fantasic, and when I want a pancake for breakfast, I get Aunt Jemima's Frozen Cinnamon French Toast. It has 4 grams of protein per slice, and it hits the spot! Good luck to you!

I have used the sugar free syrup but find that it has loads of maple smell and not much maple taste. (My 4 year old loves it tho!) I found this syrup called apple butter syrup that is REALLY TASTY. It tastes kind of like concentrated apple cider and the sugar in it is mostly from the apple juice. I use it in oatmeal and with SF vanilla ice cream and milk to make an apple-cinnamon milkshake. It is so flavorful that I don't have to use much at a time. I don't eat waffles/pancakes/french toast too often--not cuz of carbs but because waffles made me dump early on and I don't really have much of a taste for them anymore. I do eat oatmeal or 7-grain cereal made with milk fairly often in an attempt to keep things movin' if you know what I mean! ;)
