Question:
I checked the library and got a few answers but still confused.

My approval came today. Yay! BUT, last week I got lab results sugar 129 non-fasting, so I need to check them again. I checked them again on a friends glucometer FASTING, and they were 184 YIKES! In the afternoon non-fasting 164. What does this mean? Will it delay surgery?    — Lesa H. (posted on September 12, 2002)

You didn't say whether or not you have ever been diagnosed in the past with diabetes. Your doctor might run a three month average of your blood sugar. (Just another fasting blood test.) You might be a borderline diabetic, but don't panic, it shouldn't affect your having surgery. I'm waiting for surgery and had the same thing happen. I check my sugar usually once every few days and try to make sure I don't have too many carbs. My husband is a diabetic, so I know what to look out for. And, remember, once you have the surgery, you probably won't be borderline anymore. According to my doc, the diabetes is usually "cured" because of the surgery. Good luck!!!

I was diagnosed as Borderline Type II diabetic during pre op testing. That was just one more poblem that helped with my approval. I had an injection of insulin day after surgery while still in the hospital. Afterward my blood sugar was normal. Having the surgery tends to regulate and cure diabetes. I am almost 3 weeks post op and feeling Wonderful !!!!!!! GOOD LUCK :)

My sugar the morning of surgery was 302. I didnt know I had any sugar problems. I was however on insulin the intire hospital stay. And got a finger poke often. I dont think this will at all delay you. :0) good luck~~

There is no borderline diabetic, you either are or you aren't. I was told this by 2 doctors because I was in denial about being a diabetic, I thought I could beat it even though it is something that is bigtime in my family. Anyways, my sugar always lingered around the 200's and it didn't delay my surgery at all. Good luck!

My blood sugars were in the 300's pre-op, and within 3 weeks they were totally normal. And now (5 months post-op) I am hypoglycemic. It is a very tricky game to get it all balanced out. With your approval all set don't stress out... you will be going down faster than you think! BTW, stress can raise your blood sugar. Did they do a fasting hemoglobin A1-C? That is the best measure of long term blood sugar levels.
