Question:
Will I always have this problem or will it improve after surgery??

I'm wondering if anyone can tell if edema of the legs is mostly from MO,or is it something that I may always have? I only have it in the left leg, along with severe vericous veins.I am to self concious to wear shorts or dresses cuz my left leg is almost 2 inches bigger then the right due the swelling.I do take a prescription diaretic(sp?)but it doesn't seem to help. Please tell me that this will go away along with the extra weight?? Thanx in advance........    — kim M. (posted on July 30, 2002)

I always have problems with the edema in both of my feet and calves and my left leg is bigger also. I take 80 mg of lasix sp? a day and it really doesnt do that much good. I am praying that it will go away once my surgery is over. I figure it is due to MO, so my doc says. Some people have said that their swelling did go away once the weight started coming off. Lets hope this happens to both of us! May God Bless you through your journey.

At 26, I am the queen of varicose veins. I developed them long before I became obese (at age 7). My skinny mom and her sister have them, so I guess it's genetic. Anyway, I can easily measure my bad leg at 1/2-1 inch bigger around than the other. The edema is so awful, and I keep it hidden. I plan to have sclerotherapy (saline injections) when I lose a little more weight. It is about $600 for both legs, and will treat veins up to 7mm. This should take care of the edema too. In the mean time, get you some support hose (you can get them at Wal-Mart by the pharmacy for about $15 a pair). Lying on your back, elevate your feet for a while before putting them on. This allows the blood to drain from them instead of squishing it in with the compression. Good Luck, hope this advice helps.

I had severe edema before surgery. And yes, having the surgery did help. I no longer have ANY edema at all. The only thing that concerns me about your post is that you say it is only in one leg. That is a little unusual. I hope that you have had your doc check out your edema amd make sure that there is nothing else going on causingthe edema.

I too had that same problem. It was horrible I had to wear shoes that were too big due to this. I was on lasix, which did nothing but keep me in the restroom. I'm post op now and cannot believe it. My leg is normal. I keep looking at to make sure that I'm not dreaming....Good Luck
