Question:
Protein drinks make me dump...any suggestions???

I am 8 mos post op and my blood work is absolutely wonderful, per my dr. I am not taking any vitamins or protein supps AT ALL, but would like to supplement my meals with protein drinks...I have tried soy milk, even chocolate, and protein drinks....They make me very sick to my stomach and I go sound asleep for almost an hour...I guess I am dumping...any suggestions on what protein drinks to get that won''t make me dump?????    — Joi G. What kind of protein drinks were you drinking that made you dump? How did you mix them up? I drink PS 100 chocolate, mixed with a little crushed ice and about 6 oz water... and blended.. never have dumped on my protein supps.. Take care

My doctor has me using Glucerna. They are low in sugar for people with diabetes. You can find it by the Pharmacy. I have not tried them yet, I am still pre-op. Surgery date 4/30. Good Luck.

That's how I feel when I dump. I used to dump on all my protein drinks when I was putting either banana or milk in them. I'm hooked now on 16 oz water (I like it dilute), a few strawberries (frozen, no sugar added) and a scoop of Sci Fit Whey Protein (or any whey protein). I find these not only tolerable, but I love the taste. I also throw in a few frozen raspberries or frozen peaches for extra flavor. I just blend them in the blender. The frozen fruit gives it some thickness, no ice required. Though, use water from the fridge. They are large and dilute, and I just sip it for awhile. Good luck! Meredith

I had the same problem with protein drinks immediately post op, and someone suggested Isopure from GNC. It is the consistency of Kool Aid or Juice, and has 40 grams of protein in a 20 oz bottle. I have only tried the Alpine Punch, and the flavor reminded me of Cherry Jolly Ranchers. :) Hope that helps a little!!

I hope you're getting copies of your bloodwork results and double checking them with your PCP. The no supp-ing scares me. I've seen too many 20/20 episodes of people who had docs who thought one thing and they ended up being wrong. So just do yourself a favor and get your own copies so you know what your doc is checking for (mine didn't check for protein in the first year unless specifically requested). Ok, you didn't ask me any of that did you? Try protein powdered drinks mixed with water and ice. That should help with the dumping. Good luck and God Bless!

Hi Joi, I have the same problem as you. I take whey protein and I am glued to the bathroom for about 4 hours!! When I first had my surgery I tried the "Atkins Protein Shake" and I didn't care for the taste. But at that time, my taste buds were totally out of wack!! Now that Iam 4 months post-op the Atkins protein shake taste GREAT!!! I love it ! You got to try it!! 2 grams of sugar and its loaded with vitamins and it has 20 grams of protein. It even has potassium (440) mg. Flavors are chocolate, strawberry and vanilla!! Its in every store too. Hope this helps you!!!

Well that probably all depends on the type of protien drinks you are taking. Many, like Slim Fast and Herbalife, are extremely high in sugar, and are very likely to cause dumping for those who have had RNY. I would recommend using one that is meant for low carb diets, as they are very low in sugar. I like Carb Solutions powder (sold at Wal-mart) and many people like Designer Protien. When looking at a pretien supplement, check the sugar content. If it has more than 2-3 grms per serving, then avoid it.
