Question:
Why do so many individuals have such unrealistic goals?

I have read hundreds of profiles and it appears as if so many people feel like failures if they 'only' lose 50-60 lbs in three to six months? I can't even lose 10 lbs in three months dieting and exercising--I would do the happy dance if I lost 60 pounds! Are high expectations typical for those having surgery or do many of us focus too much on those who have atypical results, ie those who lose abnormally excessive amounts of weight in short periods of time? I would appreciate any feedback--I want to know what to expect post surgery.    — jenn2002 (posted on August 21, 2001)

In general, the more weight you have to lose, the faster it will come off. It also seems that those who have dieted alot in the past (some of us were on a diet for 30 years straight) are more resistant to losing weight and plateau alot. Every one loses at their own rate. Try (it is hard, but please try) not to compare yourself to everyone else. Know that it will come off...even if it comes off a little slower than others here. Why are we all in such a big hurry? This is for the rest of our lives.

I think its because we are often unrealistic people... We are our own worst enemies. Set reasonable goals.. if you cant meet them readjust them and make an effort to succeed. There is nothing set in stone post surgery.. everyones body reacts differently and weightloss is an individual thing.

Hi - I just went for my 12 week follow-up and am down 51 pounds. At first I thought it was a little slow until my surgeon told me I was doing GREAT!! I realized I was comparing myself to everyone else. He also explained that the goal is to loosse 1/2 of your excess weight within the first 6 months....and the the next 1/2 over the next 12 months. Well 1/2 of my excess would be 90 pounds and with a 51 pound weight loss in 3 months, I am ahead of the game!! I just thought I would share with you...I really am very pleased with my progress!! Good Luck to all, Karan
