Question:
Has anyone with Celiac Disease had RNY Bypass?

My RNY surgery was cancelled because they found that I had Celiac Sprue Disease which is a severe allergy to wheat and gluten and it damages your small intestine. Has anyone else had this surgery with this diagnosis?    — Laurie W. (posted on March 20, 2001)

Dr. Schirmer of Univ. of VA Med Ctr. told me it was not a contraindication. I presume he meant in people who ate gluten-free diets and would continue to follow them after surgery.--JM
