Question:
I'm pregnant and still losing weight...I'm concerned

I had RNY surgery 18 months ago. I am 8 1/2 weeks pregnant and I have lost 2 lbs in the last 5 days. I am eating alot and have added over the 300 additional calories that my doctor recommended to my diet. I am hypo-thyroid and my primary care doctor upped my thyroid medicine 1 1/2 months ago. Could this dose be too high and maybe caused me to be hyper-thyroid? I know that I should contact my doctor but I want to give it a few more days to see if I continue to lose. Thanks    — Julie A. I don't have an answer for you other than that baby is using up many of your calories. Like the last post, don't worry about it.

I have never been pregnant, but on my initial consult with my surgeon I asked specifically if it would harm my chances of having a child someday. He told me he operated on a patient who was 1 day pregnant (unknown to him or her) and she lost 90 pounds during the pregnancy and delivered a healthy boy. If you are getting your nutrients and your doctor is not concerned I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Lot's of women who have never had WLS lose weight during pregnancy, especially in the early months when morning sickness and nausea are more likely. I lost a couple of pounds early on, then stayed the same for a couple of office visits, then finally began gaining weight. I gained a total of 40 pounds before I delivered. I lost it all pretty fast, so don't panic!

When I was pregnant with my kids 9 and 7 years ago I had a lot of morning sickness and lost weight for the first few months (all of this was pre WLS). About the 3rd or 4th month it subsided and then I started to gain back what I lost. The last two months of the pregnancies I think I gained about 10 lbs. I wouldnt panic just yet. If it get to the point where you can never keep anything down then I would see the doc, but I wouldnt worry just yet. Good Luck!

Listen to your doctor. I had not had my bypass yet when I was pregnant. But I was sick, in and out of hospital all nine months. I actually lost 40lbs while pregnant. I have a happy healthy 4 year old now.

Hi there, I'm 10 weeks pregnant and had my RNY 3.5 yrs ago. I'm no longer loosing weight because of the surgery, but because of morning sickness (food aversions more like it) I have lost 3 lbs. My OB told me not to worry about it, that it will be the next trimester before I need to worry about gaining. (words I never thought I would hear someone mutter to me). At anyrate, I would check with your doc just to see how he feels about it...I've talked to quite a few (not just posties) who have lost some weight in the first trimester. Best wishes to ya! I am 19 months post op and 30 weeks pregg and have gained 7 lbs so far. Dr is fine with this since the baby is growing and the size he should be. Get regular ultra-sounds and as long as the baby is growing and where it should be at this stage in your preg I wouldnt worry - the baby will take weight from you! congrats and enjoy! Kim was 366/now 200
