I color my hair every five weeks, and have since four weeks post-op. I haven't had any problems with it.

If you find a straighten that works let me know. My hair has always been very curly. It is really bad since WLS! In fact so much so that I just shave off my hair and be done with it. Hair straigteners only make it worse. So IF you find one that works please let me know. ;)

I'm a little further out than you and hair is falling out still. I did go for a hairstyle change...but too scared to color...I fear I may further traumatize those poor follicles! It's nice to hear others have colored without a problem. Maybe I'll re-think my decision to wait.

I had a perm at one month out, lost it by the handfuls months 3 through 6 (I'm 9 months out and it's just slowing down now), month 7 colored it, month 8 permed it (straight this time). The procedures seemed to have little effect on the hair loss actually, didn't seem to make it worse or anything. My hair is a lot thinner now, but healthy--shiny, minimal split ends and stuff. I don't think perming and stuff has anything to do with the hair loss.

My WORSE side effect of WLS was the hair falling out literally in handfuls. Started about two months out and lasted about two or three months. Buy stock in Draino! It will stop and it does grow back.

Oh...to answer your question, yes, I 'hit the bottle' every 4 weeks without any problems. Didn't speed up the hair loss or slow it down. I had a perm right before surgery and again the six month. The perm really helped me look like I had more hair than I did.

I just want to comment on this hair issue. I don't know if what I did helped or I was just lucky. I had surgery 6 months ago and have lost 80 pounds. I have 25 to go. I have only lost a few hairs here and there. After surgery I started taking biotin and vitamin E along with my multi vitamins and calcium and, and, and....I know I didn't loose as fast as some but I am older and didn't want to. I read of others on this web site that also used these vitamins with the same results.

Hi I checked your page to see if you were a woman of color as myself and I think that some of the other posters don;t really understand what you mean so I hope that I do. I have gotten a relaxer in my hair since the surgery because my hair is really curly. At one point this summer I didn;t relax my hair for three months and I had gotten highlights, but in August I decided it was easier for me to manage with a relaxer and I got it put back in, the week before I had my stylist lighten my hair with bleach to obtain the hair color that I wanted, and then the following week I got the relaxer and the front of my hair broke up-I was devastated and crying because my ahir was so healthy and strong before. The color is shedding and I have since started taking a hair and nails vitamin 2500mcg of biotin -I am currently keeping my hair braided to give it a break thank god only a little of the front broke off, but if you are going to relax it I would not color it. One or the other. 6 mos and down 90lbs-Good Luck

I didn't color mine while it was falling out, but I did start drinking a Real Meals shake every morning and the hair loss stopped quite quickly. The biotin in the shake is very good for your hair loss - so if you want to end this phase as quickly as possible, I strongly recommend a Real Meal shake for breakfast. Good luck!

I colored my hair 1 week post-op RNY and have done it every month since then (almost 2 years ago). Even though I had hair loss, it still didn't hurt my hair to have it colored or make it fall out any faster.
