Question:
4 wks post-op - I feel like I have so much gas in my pouch, help?

I have to burp a thousand times when I am having lunch. Sometime, I get incredible pains in my pouch. Is this common? I have vomited from this only 3 times, but the pain is horrible. Does anyone take Gas-X or something like that?    — Lauren C. (posted on June 13, 2002)

I am 6 months post op and still have to burp a lot when I eat. Earlier on I had to burp in between each bite of food or I would feel sick. I think this is normal. When I have gas pains I do take Gas-X and it helps me. Don't be afraid to give your surgeon a call though and ask him/her what they think.....

Hi Lauren, I am now 5 weeks post op and still on full liguids/soft diet. I too burp a great deal. It doesn't matter what I eat I just do. I was told it is because our pouch is so small it cannot accomodate both food and air, and it's natural to get air in our stomachs when we eat and talk. I guess we will live forever saying "pardon me". :)

I got the generic (Walmart brand- Equate) of Extra Strength Gas-X. It was a Godsend. I think we really need this kind of thing early post op. I also agree with Gina that when we eat we get some air down in our stomachs. Someone blasted me nastly last year for suggesting the "exact same thing". But there is some air in our mouths when we eat and some WILL go down with our food. After a few months post op, the air did'nt bother me anymore. But when you are new, it will. Do get some sort of gas pills of your choice. I did'nt have alot of money so I got Equate (Walmart brand) of EXTRA strength GasX.

I had a lot of burping and gurgling for the first 4 months or so, but the further out I get the less of a problem it is. It is painful for me at times, but mostly I just feel like I have to burp and can't get it out. Don't worry, it does get better!
